"I won't—"
Before she could finish her refusal, her phone rang. It was Karl.
Evelyn took a deep, steadying breath and forced a bright tone. "Hi, Karl."
"Are you off work yet? I was going to send the driver to bring you to the estate for dinner. Tell that husband of yours he needs to keep you company tonight."
Evelyn glanced up at Xavier. His face was thunderous, radiating an unapproachable, bone-chilling hostility.
Her heart gave a painful twinge, but she spoke apologetically, "Actually, we're planning to go out for a romantic dinner tonight just the two of us."
Karl instantly brightened up. "Oh, wonderful, wonderful! Enjoy your meal. Maybe catch a movie afterward."
She agreed easily, successfully cheering the old man up.
She had a true gift for it. With just a few well-placed words, she could always make Karl completely happy.
By the time she hung up, Xavier's patience had completely evaporated. Before she was even fully settled in the passenger seat, he slammed on the gas.
An hour later, the car pulled up to the hospital entrance.
Evelyn followed him into the private suite.
Vickie's injuries had already been treated; half of her face was covered in a pristine white bandage, making the rest of her pale face look tragically small and fragile. Dressed in a standard hospital gown, she leaned weakly against the pillows, looking as delicate as a soap bubble ready to burst.
She was currently weeping softly, while her manager, Zandra Jacobs, spoke to her in hushed, comforting tones.
The moment Zandra spotted Xavier, she marched right up to him and fired off like a machine gun. "Mr. Farrell, thank God you're here! She just woke up screaming from a nightmare. Even in her sleep, she was begging someone not to slash her face!"
