The morning passed quickly. At noon, they all gathered at Grace’s for lunch.
Jonas brought out a large strawberry cake. “Sylvia, come have some cake!”
“You made this?” Sylvia asked, impressed.
Jonas scratched his head, smiling sheepishly. “Yeah. I like painting, but I also love food. I’ve dabbled in everything—French, Chinese, even baking.”
Jenny dipped her finger into the frosting, tasted it, and grinned at Sylvia. “Surprised? Our Jonas is a man of many talents.”
Jonas shot her a disgusted look. “Are your hands even clean?”
Jenny held her hand out right under his nose. “Fresh from scrubbing the toilets. Still has that authentic aroma. Want a whiff?”
No one was surprised by Jenny’s blunt humor; they just laughed. Jonas wrinkled his nose and theatrically recoiled.
Just then, Jenny spotted Gabriel walking over. Her eyes lit up as she cut a slice of cake and ran to him. “Hero, have some cake!”
Jonas scoffed. “It’s not yours to give.”
“Who made the cake?” Gabriel asked.
Sylvia, already enjoying a slice, answered with a smile. “Jonas did. It’s delicious. Isn’t he amazing?”
“It does smell good,” Gabriel acknowledged, but he placed the slice on the table. “I don’t really like sweets.”
“Oh, you don’t?” Jenny chirped. “Then I’ll bake you a cake that isn’t sweet.”
Jonas, choosing not to expose the fact that Jenny couldn’t boil water to save her life, turned to Sylvia. “Go ahead and eat. I made two bigger cakes to take to the students.”
Sylvia was genuinely impressed. Jonas was a young man, but he was so kind and thoughtful, always thinking of the children. “That’s so much work.”
“It’s nothing,” Jonas said, a little embarrassed. “They’re my students for the day. You have to spoil your own.”
“This is a monumental moment in my life!” she gushed.
Sylvia arched a barely perceptible eyebrow. Jenny admired him so much—could she possibly know who he really was? Unlikely.
“Mr. Carnes isn’t your boss,” Sylvia said playfully. “Why do you care so much about his opinion?”
“Because my hero is handsome!” Jenny declared with utmost seriousness.
Sylvia was speechless.
Okay, so she was the shallow one. Some people didn’t need to rely on merit when they could win fans with their looks alone.
Grace spoke up. “This afternoon, only York has his English class. The rest of you are free.”
“Let’s go hiking up the mountain!” Jenny suggested immediately. “We can enjoy the scenery and do some sketching. The mountains are beautiful in the spring.”
