She turned to Gabriel. “Hero, will you come with us?”
Before Gabriel could answer, Grace said, “Gab, you should go with them. I’ll feel better if you’re there.”
Gabriel nodded. “No problem.”
Jenny then looked at Sylvia. “Sylvia, want to come?”
Sylvia thought for a moment. “No, that’s okay. I’ll stay and keep Grace company this afternoon.”
Gabriel kept his eyes on his food, his expression unreadable.
“Don’t worry about me,” Grace said with a gentle smile. “You should all go have fun. It’s not often you get a chance to relax like this.”
Jonas chimed in. “Yeah, come with us. The teacher might hold an extra class for the students this afternoon, so you’ll be all alone if you stay.”
Only then did Sylvia nod. “Alright.”
Gabriel set down his utensils. “I’m finished. I need to go make a call. Just let me know when you’re ready to leave.”
“Okay,” Grace smiled. “I’ll have Sylvia come get you.”
Gabriel gave a quiet hum of acknowledgment and left.
Jenny propped her chin on her hand, gazing after him with a starstruck expression. “Even his back looks handsome.”
Jonas snickered. “Stop staring. You’re drooling enough to create Niagara Falls.”
Jenny shot him a glare and stuffed a large spoonful of cake into her mouth.
After a half-hour break, the group gathered outside the manor at one o’clock. Sylvia had been with Grace, so she arrived just before Gabriel did.
Jenny looked from Gabriel to Sylvia and back again, a grin spreading across her face. “Did you two plan to wear matching outfits?”
“Look at you, so quick on the uptake!” Jenny praised, then handed him her own portfolio. “To help you make an even better impression, you can carry this for me too.”
Jonas smirked. “So that’s what this was about.”
She shoved it into his hands and patted his shoulder. “Go on, impress us.”
Jonas slung her portfolio over his other shoulder and called out, “Alright, let’s move out!”
The group of five, including Una, set off toward the foot of the mountain.
An hour later, they were on the trail. “Do you guys know who owns the manor we’re staying at?” Jonas asked.
Jenny’s hand shot up. “I know this one! I heard the teacher on the phone. It belongs to the Jarvis family!”
Jonas nodded as they walked. “Even this trail we’re on was built by them. Before the highway at the foot of the mountain connected to the village on the other side, and before the tunnel was built, farmers from inside the mountains had to hike out to sell their goods. They often had to travel at night to get an early start, and it wasn’t uncommon for people to fall. The Jarvis family built this mountain path, and later, they worked with the government to build the highway too.”
