His skin was firm and smooth, a captivating mix of raw power and resilience that contrasted sharply with her soft, pale hands.
She didn't hesitate, her hands gliding down his chest, spreading the lather. As she moved back up, he suddenly grabbed her hand, his arm tensing, veins standing out.
“That’s enough. Get out.”
“It takes a few rounds to get properly clean,” Sylvia challenged. “After this, we can do body lotion. I’m happy to help.”
His eyes were black holes, swirling with a dangerous intensity that threatened to pull her in. “If you don’t leave now, I can’t guarantee what will happen.”
Sylvia glanced down, then thought better of pushing him further. She obediently rinsed him off and left.
As the door closed, she thought she heard a muffled groan from inside. Her expression changed, thinking he had hurt his wound. But as her hand touched the doorknob, she realized what it was. Her eyes glinted with amusement as she quickly turned and walked away.
She had intended to go upstairs, but as she opened the door, she saw the housekeeper setting the table in the dining room. Looking down at her own water-splashed t-shirt and pants, she realized that going out like this would only lead to misunderstandings.
She went back into the room and sat on the sofa to wait.
He emerged a moment later, a towel wrapped around his waist, another in his hand drying his hair. He saw she was still there and raised an eyebrow, a silent question as to why she hadn't left.
“Gina is out there,” Sylvia said, referring to the housekeeper. “Can you ask her to leave first?”
Gabriel’s eyes swept over her, and he understood immediately. He went to his closet, pulled out one of his own t-shirts, and handed it to her. “You can shower in here. Come out for dinner when you’re done.”
“No, I need my own body wash and lotion. Besides, I can’t just change my shirt. Just get her to leave,” Sylvia insisted.
He frowned at her. “You’re so high-maintenance.”
Sylvia just arched an eyebrow back at him.
Gabriel went out. The housekeeper immediately smiled. “Mr. Carnes, dinner is ready.”
He sat down. “That’s all for tonight. You can go rest. The dishes can wait until tomorrow.”
They finished their meal in silence.
Afterward, Sylvia stood up to clear the table. “Leave it,” Gabriel said. “The housekeeper can get it in the morning.”
Sylvia didn’t look up. “You should go to bed. I’ll go up after I’m done here.”
He didn’t leave. He started helping her.
The U-shaped kitchen was spacious, but as they stood at the sink washing dishes, the atmosphere remained tense and cold.
As they were finishing up, Sylvia stared at the running water and said softly, “You were right. I am conflicted.”
Not about which path to choose, but about the fact that even after choosing, she was still so drawn to him.
But Gabriel clearly misunderstood. A man as proud as him would never allow himself to be someone’s option.
