“Please, don’t thank me,” Eugene said quickly. “Like I said, we’re family now.”
Dora had been terrified about her future. With the old woman gone, she had no reason to believe the Winters family would continue to employ her. They might even sell the house. Eugene’s words were a profound relief.
“You don’t have to give me the house, sir. Just letting me stay is enough. I don’t need a salary. I’ll be here to cook a meal for you whenever you visit,” she said, her voice thick with emotion.
“Don’t worry about it,” Eugene said. “It’s all arranged.”
Dora nodded through her tears, saying no more.
After they finished eating, Sylvia helped Eugene go through some of Grandma Winters’s belongings.
In an old cedar chest, they found all of Eugene’s childhood clothes, his awards from kindergarten and elementary school, and even a plastic medal he had won in a game. She had saved everything.
Seeing these things, Eugene finally broke down, his body shaking with sobs.
Sylvia could only sit with him in quiet companionship.
…
For the next two days, Sylvia stayed by Eugene’s side, helping him with the arrangements. She didn’t interfere, merely offering her quiet support.
On the third day, at the memorial service, Sylvia attended as a guest and laid a final bouquet of flowers for the old woman.
Many people came to pay their respects. Sylvia saw Eugene’s grandfather there. He stood before the portrait for a long time. Sylvia wondered if he felt any regret, but she decided he probably didn’t, because he soon left with his young wife.
Mrs. Winters pulled Eugene into a quiet corner. “Who was that woman you were just talking to?” she demanded.
“Today is Grandma’s funeral,” Eugene said coldly. “I don’t want to discuss this with you.”
“If you didn’t want to discuss it, you shouldn’t have let her show up here today!”
A cold anger settled on Eugene’s face. “She is my girlfriend, and she came to pay her respects to my grandmother. You’re being completely unreasonable.”
“Eugene,” Mrs. Winters said, her face a mask of disapproval, “I have already found a suitable match for you, a girl a hundred times better than that Sylvia. You will end things with her immediately. Otherwise…”
Eugene laughed humorlessly. “Otherwise what?”
“If you dare to defy me for that woman,” Mrs. Winters said, her eyes widening in a clear threat, “then the Winters family fortune will be left entirely to your brother, Aries. So you need to decide what’s more important: that woman or your family.”
