He lifted his eyes slightly to look into Norah's, which were so pure and clear they were like mirrors reflecting all of his own unsightly past.
His Adam's apple bobbed. His gaze cooled, and he lowered his eyes.
The main lights in the room were off, with only the strip lighting inside the wardrobes casting a moon-like glow. It illuminated the man's chiseled features, and Norah found her concentration wavering, her movements becoming more labored.
Finally, his face was clean-shaven. Norah slowly straightened up, her almond eyes shining with a soft light as she stared at him without blinking.
Without the stubble, the man looked at least five years younger. His jawline was sharper and more defined, his features clearer and more striking. He was so handsome and dashing that her heart couldn't help but pound in her chest.
Xavier brushed a hand over his shoulder. Noticing Norah staring at him, he frowned slightly. “What is it?”
Norah smiled, shaking her head. Her eyes were soft as she said in a low voice, “I won't say anything if you're too lazy to shave normally, but when we get married, you have to be clean-shaven just like this, okay?”
Xavier's hand paused on his shoulder. He whipped his head around to look at her, frowning. “What wedding? Norah, did everything I said to you mean nothing?”
Norah ignored his scolding and turned to clean the razor.
Xavier knitted his brows at her. “I'm going to change. You should leave first.”
Norah hummed in agreement and was about to turn and leave when she heard the doorknob turning.
She jumped, taking a step back, and looked nervously at Xavier. “Someone's coming!”
Before Xavier could say anything, Norah pulled open a wardrobe door and shoved him inside.
Worried that if someone walked in on them it would damage Norah's reputation, Xavier complied. But then, in a flash, Norah ducked in after him, clutching the clothes he'd taken off, and quickly shut the door.
Fortunately, the wardrobe went all the way to the ceiling, so even someone as tall as Xavier didn't have to crouch. He leaned against the inner wall and said sarcastically in the darkness, “So you do get scared.”
Norah whispered, “I'm worried about *your* reputation.”
Yvonne looked at the juice stain on the hem of her dress, equally annoyed. “Who knew that child would suddenly run over!”
The two of them walked around the screen into the inner section as they spoke.
Norah closed the wardrobe door tightly and hugged Xavier. This time, she was genuinely nervous.
Norah had known since the holidays that this Mrs. Hanson, Hannah, was not kind to Xavier. She wore the mask of a benevolent stepmother, but underneath, who knew what vile and vicious thoughts she harbored.
And with the scheming Yvonne added to the mix, if the two of them found her and Xavier together, they definitely wouldn't keep it a secret.
They might even accuse Xavier of taking advantage of a younger girl.
Because of Xavier's rebellious past, everyone already had a prejudiced view of the eldest son of the Hanson family. Would she end up getting him into trouble again?
The more Norah thought about it, the more panicked she became. Her hands, clutching Xavier's vest, started to sweat.
