Estelle suppressed a smile. "Yes. What else could it be?"
When the man's face darkened, his presence became incredibly intimidating. Only Estelle could still manage a smile.
Gabriel continued walking, his lips pressed into a thin line, not saying a word.
Seeing his expression change over a simple comment about "mere admiration," Estelle found it unexpectedly amusing.
She caught up to him, tilting her head to look at his tense profile. "Sylvia will be here tomorrow. You can ask her yourself."
Gabriel stopped, turned to look at Estelle, and slowly broke into a smile. "Are you messing with me?"
"One sentence and his whole expression changed!" Estelle remarked with a sense of accomplishment. "That's so satisfying!"
Gabriel grinned and reached out to ruffle her hair. "You little rascal, even daring to tease me. It seems you're not afraid of me at all anymore!"
Estelle dodged his hand. "I was never afraid of you!"
Laughing and talking, they arrived at Old Mr. Jarvis's door. The light inside was indeed still on.
They knocked and went in. Old Mr. Jarvis was at his desk looking at a photo album. Seeing them, he took off his reading glasses and smiled. "How did you two end up coming together?"
"We both wanted to come chat with Grandpa, so it was a happy coincidence," Estelle said with a light smile, taking a seat opposite him. "What are you looking at, Grandpa?"
Old Mr. Jarvis chuckled. "Looking at photos of you when you were little."
Estelle was surprised and curious. "Photos of me as a child? How come I've never seen them?"
Gabriel poured two cups of tea, placing one in front of Old Mr. Jarvis and one in front of Estelle. He took a seat as well and said with a faint smile, "I don't remember them either!"
Old Mr. Jarvis had two albums in his hands. The soft, dark brown leather covers had a sheen from years of handling and looked quite old.
Flipping the page, she saw another photo: her with a large orange cat.
Seeing the cat brought a flood of memories.
She had been at the Jarvis estate for two months and still wouldn't speak to anyone. On a doctor's recommendation, her grandfather had someone find a cat for her.
But she didn't like cats and would keep her distance from it.
In the photo, she had gained a little weight since her arrival, her cheeks filling out. It was winter, so she was wearing a pink satin-padded jacket, her hair in two little buns. She sat with her knees drawn up on the stone steps, while the big-faced yellow cat sat on the wooden veranda nearby.
She was looking at the sunset, while the cat was looking at the eastern wall. Though the photo was old, you could still feel the chilly atmosphere of mutual indifference between the girl and the cat.
She couldn't help but want to smile.
