The people in the cars behind could only hear the shouting from up front, but they couldn’t see what was happening, leaving them consumed with curiosity.
In the group chat, Carson asked again, [What on earth is going on?]
Charlie sent a voice message, his voice a low chuckle. “Marrying a daughter of the Jarvis family isn’t easy. Good thing it’s our Mr. Lamont—he has what it takes!”
Someone held a phone out of their car window, snapped a picture, and sent it to the group. Everyone was left speechless.
Carson typed, [I’m already starting to tremble!]
Millard and his team were handling the first obstacle, which meant the groomsmen were definitely up next. If the first challenge was enough to make your insides churn, the thought of what was to come was enough to make your scalp tingle.
Norah couldn’t see either. Hearing Xavier play Charlie’s voice message, she leaned over. “What is it? What’s happening?”
Her whole body rested against Xavier’s arm, the top of her head brushing his chin. A sweet, fresh scent filled the air, and Xavier’s heart skipped a beat. He angled his phone slightly so she could see.
“Whoa!” Norah stared at the glasses of alcohol, completely stunned.
Xavier’s gaze, however, fell on Bruce and the others at the edge of the photo. His eyes darkened slightly as he said with a faint smile, “I suddenly understand why Estelle wanted me to be a groomsman.”
“Hmm?” Norah looked up at him.
Their eyes met. They were so close that Xavier could see his own reflection in her clear eyes. His heart, which had just skipped a beat, now gave a solid thump. He kept his expression composed, but his voice was a deep, slow rumble.
“She was afraid your dear Jonathan wouldn’t be able to get past these first few challenges.”
Estelle had been worried he would team up with Bruce’s side, so she pushed him onto the Lamont team—and, conveniently, pushed him toward Norah. Killing two birds with one stone.
Norah clicked her tongue. “See? Estelle really does care about my Jonathan!”
She peered out the window. “Do you think Millard and the others will get drunk? Should I go out and help?”
Xavier’s brow furrowed, and he turned away without another word.
*
At the front of the line of Rolls-Royces, Millard bent down, picked up the first glass, and downed it in one go. The others followed suit, clearing the path one swift gulp at a time.
Someone was tasked with collecting the empty glasses, and a clear path quickly began to form. The surrounding guests couldn’t help but cheer for Millard and his men as they advanced.
Millard had no idea how many glasses he’d drunk. He didn’t even look up to see how many rows remained. He just walked forward with steady steps, his gaze firm and his face impassive, projecting an aura of invincibility.
Nate, Manny, and the others didn’t hesitate either, downing glass after glass as if they had an endless capacity for alcohol.
Even if they got drunk, they couldn’t fall. They had to clear this path so Mr. Lamont could get to his bride.
