She sat down in the chair opposite Gabriel, her beautiful eyes curving into a smile. After a glance at him, she picked up a glass of wine from the table and drank it down.
The man watched as she tilted her head back slightly, her slender neck fully exposed, rising and falling with each swallow.
He let out a soft scoff. “Sylvia, aside from your little tricks, what else are you good at?”
Every time she made a mistake in his presence, she would preemptively accept punishment to shut him up, fearing something more severe.
Sylvia set down the glass. Perhaps the wine had stung her eyes, as they appeared moist. Her red lips were slightly parted, and in her innocent-looking state, she was utterly unaware of how bewitching she looked.
Gabriel’s gaze darkened, his voice growing deeper and more magnetic. “The only reason you ever escape punishment isn’t because of your cleverness, but because I’ve always indulged you. Understand?”
Sylvia’s heart skipped a beat. A flush from the wine rose to her cheeks, making her eyes look even more watery.
Gabriel looked out the window, his eyes sweeping over the retreating figures of Mrs. Winters and Evelyn, who were laughing and chatting. He turned back to Sylvia with a hint of mockery. “Your boyfriend’s mother doesn’t seem to like you very much.”
Sylvia dabbed a trace of wine from the corner of her lips, her expression composed. “True love always has to overcome trials.”
Gabriel’s eyes instantly turned cold, and even his smile held a chill. “True love? Are you drunk after just one glass?”
Sylvia wanted to retort, but whether it was guilt or something else, the words wouldn’t come. She simply closed her eyes in response.
After all, closing one’s eyes could mean anything.
Gabriel stared at her profile, trying to read something from her serene face. After a moment, he gave a cool smile. “Do you need my help?”
Sylvia turned to him, startled. “Help with what?”
“To back you up, of course.” Gabriel’s deep eyes were unreadable. “That Evelyn has the Quintin family behind her, but you have the Jarvis family. Let’s see who comes out on top.”
A few girls stood in front of the dessert house, laughing heartily at the antics of a confectioner dressed in a cartoon costume.
Farther on, green mountains rolled into the distance, with fluffy white clouds floating above their peaks. Even the sunlight seemed to soften.
The sun, filtering through the window, became even gentler, softly landing on Sylvia’s beautiful features. When she blinked her long, curled lashes, the light seemed to flow into her eyes.
Her expression gradually relaxed. The warm light induced a pleasant lethargy, and she leaned back diagonally in her chair, half-closing her eyes like a little cat blissfully basking in the sun.
Gabriel leaned back in his own chair, his cool, calm gaze fixed in the same direction as hers. He occasionally took a sip of wine, as relaxed as if he were at home, idly stroking a cat.
Occasionally, a certain little cat would turn her head and look at the man’s wine-stained lips, so crimson and alluring, like a vibrant red koi leaping in the water.
His bobbing Adam’s apple was like a cat toy dangling before her, making her want to pounce.
