“Good, you're alone today,” Gabriel said coolly.
Sylvia was speechless.
Gabriel seemed to have no intention of making small talk, grabbing her wrist and leading her to the car.
Sylvia jogged to keep up. “Where are we going?”
Were they getting straight to business? Had she given him the wrong signal last time?
Or did Mr. Carnes find this line of work so profitable that he was back for another payday?
If it was a clean transaction, she might... consider it...
Gabriel, oblivious to her wild thoughts, opened the passenger door for her. “We're going to see Georgia,” he said flatly.
All of Sylvia's theories came to a screeching halt. Her eyes widened slightly. “Georgia... she’s back in J City?”
“Yes.” Gabriel didn't spare her another word and shut the car door.
Once they were both inside, Sylvia asked, “Where is Georgia waiting for us? Why didn't she call ahead?”
Watching the traffic, Gabriel replied calmly, “You'll know when we get there.”
The sky had already darkened. In the twilight, the sharp angles of his profile gave off a cold, imposing air, making Sylvia wonder if he was still angry.
Since he wouldn't say, Sylvia didn't ask again, turning her gaze to the brightly lit city outside.
The drive was silent. When they arrived outside the Quintin family estate, Gabriel unbuckled his seatbelt. “Get out.”
Sylvia looked utterly confused. “Where are we?”
“You'll know when you get out.”
Evelyn explained through her tears, “I never wanted to replace Nana! Now that I know I'm not really your daughter, I can leave right away!”
“Where would you go? You're an orphan too!” Old Mr. Quintin couldn't bear it.
Evelyn clutched his arm, looking hurt and innocent. “Grandpa, can I still call you Grandpa?”
Old Mr. Quintin nodded. “Of course.”
Georgia turned and walked toward the gate.
Gabriel stepped forward to meet her. “Why are you in such a hurry to leave?”
Georgia fought back tears, her voice choked. “Gab, I'm not as strong as I thought. I have to go.”
Gabriel's voice was low and steady. “Are you giving up on finding Nana?”
