After yet another peal of thunder—she’d lost count of how many—she leaned into his shoulder, her eyes closed, her body trembling ever so slightly.
The man’s eyes were darker than midnight, and he lowered his head to press fervent kisses against the side of her face.
Sylvia heard the sound of a belt being unfastened. She blinked, lifted herself from him, shot him a lazy, seductive smile over her shoulder, and turned to head to her own room.
With a sharp “thud,” the door closed behind her. Sylvia turned the lock, a victorious smile flickering across her lips before she leaned back against the door and let herself laugh freely.
After a moment, she straightened her blouse and made her way to the bathroom.
In the living room,
The man stared at the now tightly shut master bedroom door, a wry, helpless look flickering across his usually impassive face. He got up and went to wash his hands in the bathroom.
When he returned, his phone buzzed—a new message.
He glanced at the screen. In the dim light, his face grew even darker.
Sylvia had sent him another payment.
He was so exasperated, he actually let out a laugh, then texted her, “Is that all it takes to satisfy you?”
A while later, Sylvia replied, “Please accept the payment, Mr. Carnes. Now that everything’s settled, let’s look forward to working together again next time.”
She’d just finished her shower and was lying on her stomach on the bed, listening to the rain outside. Something crossed her mind, and the corners of her mouth curled again.
But the man never replied.
Sylvia wondered if he was angry.
Of course, she didn’t have the nerve to open the door and check for herself.
The rain kept pouring down. Sylvia sat at her bedside, went over some project proposals, called Georgia, and then, as sleepiness crept in, she drifted off without realizing it.
Thunder continued to rumble, but she slept peacefully.
In the middle of the night, a crash of thunder jolted her awake. Sylvia glanced at the clock—it was already two a.m.
Sylvia nodded. “I’d say that ten grand was worth every penny!”
His expression darkened, his brows knitting as if he might lose his temper at any second.
But Sylvia only laughed.
Gabriel threw off the comforter and pulled her into his arms, wrapping her up with it.
Sylvia’s laughter faded as she tried to get up.
“Don’t move,” Gabriel warned. “If you really didn’t want to, do you think I could force you?”
Sylvia met his gaze. “I just want to go back to my own bed.”
“Sleep here,” he said, offering his arm for her to use as a pillow, his voice a deep, magnetic rumble. “You stared at me so long you woke me up. Now you’re staying right here.”
Sylvia rested her head on his shoulder, her eyes lingering on his collarbone. She let out a soft laugh. “Are you sure you’ll be able to sleep like this?”
