“If you can’t sleep,” Gabriel said, “we could always find something else to do.”
Sylvia was quiet for a moment before speaking in a voice so soft it was barely audible. “Why are you staying? The great Gabriel, actually willing to settle for a sofa—why?”
Gabriel’s cool gaze dropped slightly as he answered calmly, “It’s raining. I couldn’t leave.”
Sylvia’s eyes widened in sudden understanding. “So that’s the reason.”
Gabriel gave a soft laugh. “What did you think it was?”
“I thought…” Sylvia reached up, gently tugging at the front of his shirt. Her long, curled lashes trembled as they brushed his shoulder; her voice, delicate and light, carried a hint of a smile. “I thought Mr. Carnes stayed because you wanted to have my sandwiches in the morning.”
“They are quite good,” he admitted.
“Then I’ll make them for you again tomorrow.”
“Alright.”
With that, Sylvia shut her eyes and murmured, “I’m tired. I’m going to sleep now, don’t disturb me.”
“Go ahead,” Gabriel replied, pulling her closer into his arms.
Outside, the rain continued to pour, thunder rolling in the distance, as if the sky itself were splitting open. Inside, the two of them lay entwined, cocooned in a peaceful and quiet world of their own.
Sylvia drifted off almost immediately, but Gabriel found sleep impossible.
She had already teased him before bed; now, with her warm, soft body nestled against him, sleep was out of the question.
She wore only a thin silk slip, her curves outlined in the faint light, her skin smooth and soft, her scent lingering in the air. Gabriel couldn’t help regretting what he’d just said.
He didn’t know how much time had passed before drowsiness finally crept in. Half-asleep, he felt Sylvia suddenly burrow closer, her restless hand slipping inside his half-unbuttoned shirt… and he snapped wide awake.
“Sylvia!” he called her name quietly.
But Sylvia was fast asleep, not responding at all.
He took a deep breath and grabbed her hand, stopping her movements. Still, in her sleep, Sylvia instinctively tried to pull away, rolling over so abruptly she nearly fell off the sofa. Gabriel reached out and pulled her back into his arms.
