It was almost noon by the time they left the house. When they passed a flower shop, Sylvia asked Gabriel to stop the car so she could go in and buy a bouquet for Georgia.
Back in the car, she turned to Gabriel and asked, “What does Grandfather like? I’d like to pick something up for him as well.”
Gabriel replied, “No need this time. Maybe next time.”
Sylvia listened to him and nodded gently.
The light, fresh fragrance of the flowers filled the car, and Sylvia suddenly found herself looking forward to “going home.” At least this time, she no longer felt the same uncertainty she had felt before.
The Quintin Estate
Old Mr. Quintin had been restless since morning, pacing back and forth in the living room and constantly glancing out into the garden.
Old Mr. Jarvis frowned and said, “You’re making me dizzy, pacing like that. Can you just sit down for a bit? Didn’t Georgia say Sylvia would be back for lunch soon?”
Old Mr. Quintin finally sat down, looking uneasy. “Jarvis, do you think... do you think Nana doesn’t want to come back?”
Old Mr. Jarvis looked helpless. “You’ve been asking me that since the day before yesterday. I’m starting to go deaf from it. Sylvia’s just been busy these past couple of days. Give her some time.”
Old Mr. Quintin looked troubled. “I’m just worried she blames me.”
“Blames you for what?”
“For misunderstanding her before, and for all the unpleasant things I said about her in front of you.”
Mr. Carnes chimed in, “Sylvia isn’t the kind of person to hold a grudge. You’re worrying too much.”
Still, Old Mr. Quintin looked uneasy. “I just feel like Nana still seems distant from us.”
Old Mr. Jarvis tried to reassure him. “Sylvia just needs time to get used to everything. Once she settles in, she’ll get closer to you. Trust me, she’s a kind girl. If you treat her well, she’ll remember that in her heart.”
Old Mr. Quintin nodded, but soon couldn’t resist glancing at the clock again. “It’s already past noon. Maybe something’s held her up. Why don’t you call and ask?”
