Old Mr. Jarvis chuckled warmly. “Don’t worry. After all these years, we know each other’s temperaments well—there’s no way we’d truly get upset.”
He paused, then continued, “Actually, Old Mr. Quintin’s temperament has improved a lot over the years. He’s not as stubborn as he used to be. He’s genuinely regretful about having stood in the way of you and Nana’s father back then.”
Georgia nodded slowly. “I’ve noticed that these past few days. He really is different from before.”
Old Mr. Jarvis gave her a meaningful look. “You and your father have been apart for far too long. We only get so many twenty-year stretches in a lifetime. Spend more time with him while you can.”
Georgia was moved. “I will. Thank you, Mr. Jarvis, for taking care of my dad all these years.”
Old Mr. Jarvis smiled kindly. “There’s no need for thanks between our families—it’s been decades of friendship. Don’t make it sound so distant!”
Georgia laughed. “Then please don’t take my father’s words too seriously either!”
Old Mr. Jarvis huffed, “He only acts that way because he sees Gab is interested in Sylvia and wants to make things difficult. Don’t think I don’t know what he’s up to!”
Georgia couldn’t help but laugh.
Meanwhile, Old Mr. Quintin was ushering Sylvia and Gabriel inside, his face beaming with affection as he fussed over Sylvia.
“Was it hot on your way here?”
“Why are you always working overtime? You’re still young, but you have to take care of your health!”
Sylvia replied gently, “I will. Thank you, Grandpa.”
At the word “Grandpa,” Old Mr. Quintin’s expression froze for a moment. Suddenly, his eyes brimmed with tears, and he nodded again and again. “Yes, yes!”
Twenty years ago, that sweet little girl used to follow him around, calling out, “Grandpa, Grandpa!” Over these twenty years, he’d dreamed of that scene countless times. When Evelyn called him Grandpa, it felt familiar and pleasant—but hearing Sylvia say it brought on a rush of emotions, leaving him choked up and unable to speak.
There was so much sorrow and longing wrapped up in that one word.
He couldn’t help but marvel at how remarkable the bond of blood really was—how it could pierce straight to the heart.
Georgia came over, smiling. “Are you hungry? Let’s eat.”
Sylvia handed her the flowers. “Happy weekend!”
“For me?” Georgia bent to smell them. “They’re lovely. Let’s put them in a vase together later.”
Old Mr. Quintin suddenly remembered something and instructed a servant, “Fetch that flower stand and my pastel vase. Put them back by the window.”
The servant replied respectfully and went to do as told.
Georgia looked delighted. “Why put them back? Planning to hide candy for her again?”
Old Mr. Quintin chuckled. “Whatever Nana likes, I’ll hide it for her.”
Laughing and chatting, they all headed toward the dining room. Now that Nana had been found, the relationship between father and daughter was visibly warming, right before everyone’s eyes.
