Evelyn's mind was spinning. She dabbed the corner of her eye and said awkwardly, "My—my grandfather is a very traditional man. If he finds out about this, he won't let you off the hook."
Mrs. Winters looked flustered. "So what should we do?"
Evelyn pretended to be bashful. "Actually, I've always... liked Mr. Winters. And now, after what happened, I could agree... to marry him!"
Mrs. Winters was delighted. "Really?"
"But—" Evelyn's expression grew serious as she gave a stern warning, "You can't tell my grandfather about any of this yet. And you mustn't go to him yourself, either. He's stubborn. He never let my mother marry my father, which is why she was away from the family for so many years. If he finds out what Eugene did, he'll never let me marry him."
Mrs. Winters had heard rumors about the Quintin family and quickly said, "Alright, I'll follow your lead. Whatever you say, we'll do!"
Evelyn thought for a moment. "I... could marry Mr. Winters first. Once it's done, my grandfather will have no choice but to accept it."
Mrs. Winters hesitated. Her original plan had been to use the Quintin family's status to her advantage—if no one knew Evelyn was Old Mr. Quintin's granddaughter at the time of the wedding, what good would it do?
Evelyn saw through Mrs. Winters' hesitation and said with resolve, "I can get the marriage certificate with Mr. Winters first. We'll tell my grandfather when we hold the wedding ceremony. This is my only option. If you don't agree, I'll just pretend none of this ever happened. I do like Mr. Winters, and I won't make things difficult for him."
"I agree, of course I agree! Why wouldn't I?" Mrs. Winters was overjoyed. "You're willing to let go of what happened tonight and still marry Eugene—I honestly thank you!"
Mrs. Winters grabbed Evelyn's hands, clearly moved. "Once you join the Winters family, I'll treat you even better. I never had a daughter, so you'll be like my own!"
Evelyn managed a strained smile and, hiding her discomfort, got up from the bed. "I should go home now, or my grandfather will start to worry."
"Alright, I'll have the driver take you," Mrs. Winters said, supporting Evelyn as they walked out. She called the family driver to have the car brought around.
A few minutes later, Evelyn was riding in the Winters family car back to the Quintin residence.
Leaning back in her seat, she gazed at the night outside. She was tired, but a sense of relief settled over her.
Today had gone smoothly. She and Eugene now shared a real connection, and Mrs. Winters would surely urge them to make their relationship official.
Soon, she'd be Mrs. Winters. It wouldn't matter if she never came back to the Quintin house again.
Sylvia glanced back with a gentle smile. "Then why would I be hostile? We all know where we stand."
Evelyn's smile faded a little, her tone ambiguous. "I'm not going to compete with you for Gabriel, you know. You really don't need to treat me like this."
"Compete?" Sylvia seemed genuinely amused, her eyes sparkling. "That's such an assertive word. It doesn't really suit your gentle image, Evelyn. I don't think you need to use it."
With that, Sylvia left Evelyn standing there with a dark expression and continued upstairs.
Evelyn stood on the stairs, her face clouded. Was Sylvia saying she didn't even have what it took to compete for Gabriel?

Sylvia returned to her room and lay down. The bed was plenty big for both her and Georgia, but she couldn't get comfortable. She tossed and turned, unable to fall asleep.
