Sylvia took a taxi back to the restaurant to retrieve her car. It wasn't until she was sitting in the cab that she remembered—she had originally come to the restaurant for a business lunch with a client.
She hurriedly called the client to apologize.
He was an old client, always cordial. “Ms. Jarvis, there’s no need to apologize. We heard about the accident outside the restaurant. We tried to call, but you didn’t answer, and we were all worried about you. Are you alright?”
“I’m fine, thank you for understanding.”
They chatted a bit more before hanging up.
Sylvia checked her phone. Sure enough, there were numerous missed calls, including several from Gabriel.

After picking up her car, Sylvia returned to the office. By the time she arrived, it was already the end of the workday.
Sitting at her desk, Sylvia replayed the afternoon’s events in her mind. The whole thing felt almost too coincidental.
Mrs. Winters must have arranged for Eugene and Evelyn to meet at the restaurant, hoping to set them up. By chance, she had run into Eugene outside the restaurant. Then, just at that moment, a car had come barreling toward Eugene.
That driver was clearly targeting Eugene, and must have known his whereabouts in advance—meaning the would-be killer was likely someone close to him.
But the one who’d arranged for Eugene to come to the restaurant was Mrs. Winters.
Why would Mrs. Winters want to harm her own son? And if she did, she wouldn’t have asked Evelyn to come too. So it couldn’t be Mrs. Winters.
Eugene had just taken over the company and, in the process of cleaning house, had made plenty of enemies. The rival factions inside the company were complicated and well connected, so it wouldn’t have been hard for them to track Eugene’s movements.
Sylvia couldn’t figure it out, so she could only wait for news from the police.
But right now, she had something else to worry about—he was probably upset with her.
He had only sent a single word: [Okay.]
Just an acknowledgment—curt, indifferent, as if he didn’t care at all.
Sylvia bit her lip, slowly typing: [What does ‘okay’ mean? Do you believe me or not? Because I really will steal the security footage if you don’t…]
Her fingers hesitated. In the end, she deleted the entire message, set her phone down on the desk, and left it there.

She worked through the backlog until nine that night. Her mother and grandfather both called to check on her, but Gabriel never reached out.
These past few days, whenever she worked late, Gabriel would come pick her up. They’d go out for dinner together, then head home. But tonight, there wasn’t a word from him.
Sylvia packed up her things and left the office. As she drove past the restaurant where they used to eat together, she slowed the car for a moment, then picked up speed and drove away.
