When Sylvia got home, Georgia was in the kitchen personally heating up the food for her. Old Mr. Quintin, seeing her return, spoke with obvious delight, though his expression was full of concern. “Why are you always working overtime? Doesn’t your company have plenty of employees? What are they doing if not their jobs?”
Georgia walked over and replied, “Everyone has their own responsibilities. The staff have theirs, and the boss has hers. Please don’t worry, Nana knows how to handle things.”
Sylvia offered a gentle smile and explained, “Something came up this afternoon that delayed me, so I worked late. I’ll try to manage my time better next time.”
“Let’s go get some dinner,” Georgia said, taking Sylvia’s hand and leading her toward the dining room.
Old Mr. Quintin looked like he wanted to follow but stopped himself, turning back to the study to continue his tea with Old Mr. Jarvis.
In the dining room, Georgia and Sylvia sat across from each other. The housekeeper brought in the dishes and then left, giving the two women some peace and quiet for their meal.
Sylvia was surprised. “Mom, you haven’t eaten either?”
“No, I didn’t want you to come home and have to eat by yourself. So I had your grandpa and the others eat first, and waited for you,” Georgia said, putting some food on Sylvia’s plate. “I made this braised beef tendon myself—try it!”
Warmth spread through Sylvia’s heart. She took a bite, looked up, and smiled. “It’s so tender and full of flavor.”
“I don’t cook that often, but I do have a few specialties. I’ll make them all for you from now on.”
“I’d love that. We could cook together—you can teach me, Mom.”
They chatted as they ate. Near the end of the meal, Sylvia asked casually, “I haven’t seen Gabriel. Is he not home tonight?”
Georgia answered, “I just heard from Mr. Jarvis that Gabriel’s busy and won’t be coming home tonight.”
She looked at Sylvia. “He didn’t mention it to you?”
Sylvia shook her head, pretending it was nothing. “I was really busy myself today.”
After dinner, when they returned to the living room, Georgia asked Sylvia, “Haven’t you always wanted to learn how to paint? Why not ask your grandpa if he’d take you as a student?”
Old Mr. Quintin immediately brightened. “Nana, you want to learn how to paint?”
