"Who is it?" Norah asked as she walked over.
There was no response.
Norah stepped up to the door and peered through the peephole, but the hallway was empty.
She opened the door, staring out into the wide, quiet corridor just in time to hear the neighbor's door click shut.
She frowned slightly. Had her new neighbor knocked?
Glancing down, she spotted a sleek insulated food container resting on the floor. A sticky note was attached to it: "Made too much. For the new neighbor!"
Below that, two words were heavily underlined with thick strokes:
"Not poisoned!"
Norah's eyes widened in surprise. She tilted her head, looking at the tightly shut door next to hers, deciding this neighbor of hers was actually quite amusing.
Bringing the container inside, she popped the lid to find two dishes and a soup.
Braised pork ribs, a stir-fried vegetable medley, and a rich fish chowder.
The food was still piping hot. Whether she truly believed the note or was simply too tired to care, Norah didn't hesitate. She grabbed some silverware and dug right in.
Perhaps it was because she was starving, but the meal tasted incredible.
A mysterious, thoughtful neighbor had completely driven away her earlier frustration. She practically inhaled the food, idly wondering if the neighbor was a man or a woman, and thought about buying a small thank-you gift the next day.
The following day.
Norah slept in for an extra hour, feeling absolutely fantastic.
The moment she arrived at work, Adrian called her into his office. "How's the solo living treating you?"
Norah raised an eyebrow, in high spirits. "It's amazing!"
Norah laughed. "Look, I ate it and I'm fine. We're neighbors, and there are cameras in the hallway. They wouldn't dare try anything."
"You're too trusting!" Adrian scoffed, shaking his head. "Who knows? Maybe this is just a tactic to lower your guard. No more eating things given to you by strangers."
Norah smiled. "Relax, I'll be careful."
"You?" Adrian didn't buy it for a second.
As the two continued joking around, Jenny Jordan knocked and entered the office. Seeing their comfortable banter, a flash of jealousy crossed Jenny's eyes, though she quickly masked it with a sweet smile. "Boss, I have a file that needs your signature."
Norah gathered her things. "Alright, I'll let you get back to work. I'm heading out."
Still worried about her, Adrian called out one last reminder. "If that neighbor tries to hit on you, you have to tell me. And don't agree to go into their apartment either."
"I know, I know!"
Norah agreed dismissively, her back already turned to him.
