One day, Norah bumped into Jenny in the breakroom. Jenny pressed her lips into a mocking smile. "Supervisor Lamont, with the Hanson Corporation backing you, our department's performance is going to skyrocket, right? On behalf of everyone here, thank you so much!"

Norah grabbed her coffee and headed for the door. As she brushed past Jenny, she kept her voice low. "I know you're the one behind this. I already have my sources. I'm not going to let you get away with it."

Jenny's face paled slightly.

By the time she turned around, Norah was already gone.

During the afternoon meeting, Norah made a shocking announcement. Due to her proactive work ethic and outstanding performance during the review period, Gillian York would be replacing Zane Bradley as the department's deputy supervisor. HR would send out the official promotion notice shortly.

The moment the words left Norah's mouth, the room erupted in silent disbelief.

Even Gillian looked as if she had been struck by lightning. She had practically zero presence in the department, hadn't been with the company for long, and her sales numbers and skills paled in comparison to Jenny's. The fact that she was the one getting the promotion was beyond shocking.

Sitting nearby, Jenny couldn't hide the dark scowl taking over her features. She immediately challenged Norah, "Supervisor Lamont, what exactly were the criteria for this promotion? We deserve to know."

"The criteria are," Norah paused, locking eyes with Jenny with a deadpan, chilling stare, "whatever I say they are."

Jenny's eyes widened in sheer outrage.

Norah shifted her gaze to a still-dazed Gillian. Her voice softened. "Gillian, come to my office for a moment."

"Oh!" Gillian stammered, too terrified to even glance at Jenny. She scrambled to follow Norah out of the room.

The second Norah was out the door, the conference room exploded into chaos. Norah was already the subject of relentless office gossip, and now she had blatantly bypassed seasoned veterans and high-performers like Jenny to promote the completely average Gillian. It made zero sense.

Zane Bradley remained silent. Norah hadn't discussed the decision with him beforehand, and he was just as blindsided as the rest of them.

Jenny leaned over, trying to stoke the flames with a senior employee across the table. "Zachary, you've been in this department for five years. You've got the seniority and the skills. Even if she didn't promote me, it should have been you. Supervisor Lamont is just messing with us at this point, isn't she?"

Zachary let out a dry, noncommittal chuckle. "Maybe it was a decision from upper management. I'm perfectly happy where I am. A promotion doesn't really matter to me."
