After watching him drive away, she hurried back upstairs, wary that the Chambers family might call the police.
The lounge area had already cleared out. As she walked in, she overheard two sisters-in-law from the Chambers family gossiping.
"Harry's family is usually so arrogant. Their son got beaten half to death today, and they're just swallowing it?"
The other woman lowered her voice. "I heard Travis was trashing Ms. Lamont's name, and that's why he got hit. If this blows up and the Lamonts find out, do you think they'd let him off the hook?"
"No wonder!" The first woman asked, "Who beat him up, anyway?"
"No idea."
Norah leaned back against the wall. Remembering the desolate look in Gonzalez's eyes, a suffocating wave of sorrow washed over her.
It wasn't until Adrian sent a text rushing her that she finally turned and headed downstairs.
*
"Norah!"
Adrian spotted her in the garden and immediately walked over.
As he approached and reached behind his back to pull out the flowers, Norah suddenly spoke up. "Adrian."
He smiled warmly. "You go first."
Her gaze was completely serious. "I've always seen you as a friend, someone I look up to. Nothing more. Coming to your family banquet today seems to have given everyone the wrong idea, and I hope it doesn't cause you any trouble. Please clear things up with Grandpa Chambers and the rest of your family."
Adrian froze. Before he could even open his mouth, before his grand confession could even start, she had completely shut him down.
She was incredibly smart. She had rejected him firmly but without making a scene, preserving his dignity.
The smile on Norah's face looked exhausted.
"I'm feeling a little drained. I'm going to head home. Please apologize to your grandfather for me."
With that, she turned and walked away.
She had only taken a few steps when the garden behind her suddenly erupted in brilliant light. A dazzling, heart-shaped floral arch illuminated the night, and countless glowing balloons drifted up from the grass, floating into the sky—a breathtakingly romantic scene, completely empty.
Norah seemed to sense the shift behind her, but she didn't look back. She kept walking with steady, resolute steps.
