Marina let out a soft scoff and made her way into the living room.

After tossing the pineapple in the fridge, she took a quick shower. Just as she stepped out, a FaceTime call lit up her screen. It was Grandpa Wallace. He was sitting in his study, beaming with boundless affection. "Marina!"

A rare, soft vulnerability swept over Marina's features. "Grandpa! I miss you!"

The older man snorted playfully. "All talk! If you missed me, you'd come visit me!"

Marina laughed. "Well, you're seeing me now, aren't you?"

"When do you get your holiday break?" he demanded. "Just hand the company operations over to your father and come spend the winter with me!"

Marina hadn't told her grandfather about her father's recent hospitalization and ongoing recovery. Instead, she offered an exasperated excuse. "There are a few massive projects at the company that I have to personally oversee. I can't just leave!"

"So young, yet already obsessed with money!" he teased mockingly.

Marina flopped onto the sofa, hugging a throw pillow to her chest with a huge grin. "I have to make a fortune so I can take care of you in your old age!"

Her grandfather shot her a look of utter disdain. "Do I look like I need your money?"

Marina giggled endlessly.

Grandpa Wallace's expression suddenly turned serious. "Have those people in the Evert family been bullying you lately?"

Marina shook her head. "No!"

"What about Carson Foster? Is he giving you a hard time?"

"No to that, too."

He let out a heavy sigh. "You're all grown up now. Keeping the bad news to yourself and only telling me the good."
