Taking advantage of a moment while setting down dishes, Ramona leaned closer to Viola and whispered under her breath, “Miss, hold it together.”

Viola quickly schooled her expression, took a deep breath, and put on a cheerful smile.

“My sweet girl, try some of this spicy buffalo chicken. You love heat-see if this hits the spot.”

“Yes, Seraphina, have some more soup. Girls shouldn’t starve themselves. Dieting like that’s bad for your body.”

Not wanting to watch another second of the warm family scene, Viola smiled and changed the subject.

“Uncle Gregory, I don’t want to study abroad anymore. I’ve decided to stay in Valedawn for college this semester.”

“Valedawn’s universities are world-renowned… wait, didn’t you just send in your application for overseas study?” Gregory looked surprised, confused written all over his face.

“I changed my mind! Being that far away means I can’t come home often. I’d probably go crazy missing you guys.”

She exaggerated the sentiment with dramatic gestures, making both of them laugh.

Gregory affectionately patted her head. “You little rascal…”

Grinning playfully, Viola suddenly dropped her utensils and ran off. Moments later, she returned dragging a suitcase.

“Uncle Gregory, I brought you an eye massager!

“Aunt Celestine, these are your favorite face masks-I brought them all the way back from abroad.” She opened the suitcase, revealing it was packed to the brim.

Celestine didn’t expect Viola to think of them while traveling. Touched, she gently patted her hand and smiled warmly.

Then Viola, beaming, glanced at Seraphina. Her tone was full of fake remorse, but her eyes glittered with smugness.

“Sorry, Seraphina. I didn’t know you were home, so I didn’t get you anything. Next time, okay?”

Seraphina saw right through her. Calm and collected, she didn’t even look up. She kept eating slowly and said nothing.

Gregory beamed. “We’re family-no need to make a fuss. Sit down and eat.”

Celestine nodded in agreement. “And stop spending so much. Next time, tell me what you want. I’ll get it for you.”

Viola lowered her head modestly, pretending to hesitate. “Auntie, I just passed my level-nine piano exam. Could I maybe have that gold grand piano?”

Celestine froze for a moment, unsure what to say. Seraphina elegantly dabbed her lips with a napkin, her tone casual. “It was given to me yesterday.”

Viola stiffened, looking disappointed but trying to hide it. “That’s okay… I was just thinking out loud.”

Gregory quickly stepped in. “No worries. Pick something else, I’ll get it for you.”

Looking down shyly, Viola said softly, “Uncle… I’ve had my eye on that La Voiture Noire forever…”

She looked up-only to meet Gregory’s awkward expression and instantly understood.

She turned her stunned gaze to Seraphina. “Yeah,” Seraphina said with a faint smile. “That one was for me, too.”

Viola bit her lip and tried to act pitiful. Beneath the table, her fists clenched in frustration.

The mood turned tense. No one dared promise gifts anymore. Gregory quickly thought of a way to shift the subject.

“Viola, didn’t you say you wanted to be an actress? I’ll call in a few favors, help you launch your

career.”

He’d heard her mention it many times, but he hadn’t responded before-hoping she’d focus on school. Now was a perfect excuse to change the tone.

“Really? Thank you, Uncle!” Viola gasped, then threw herself at Gregory’s neck, squealing and buttering him up. “You’re the best uncle in the whole wide world!”

“Hahaha…”
