Chapter 22 Pocket Change

“I’m done.” Seraphina placed her utensils down calmly, her eyes clear and unreadable.

She turned and headed upstairs. Viola stood up too, looking oh-so-wronged but pretending to be gracious. “I’ll go check on her.”

Back at the table, Celestine shot Gregory a sharp look of disapproval.

He quickly slung an arm around her waist and whispered his apology, still looking a little shaken.

“Our daughter is terrifying. That glare could freeze hell over.”

“Pfft.”

“Do you think she’s jealous?” Gregory’s grin stretched wide. “It means I matter to her. That makes me insanely happy.”

Even if Seraphina shot him that icy little dagger look, he would gladly freeze on the spot.

“You’re ridiculous.”

At the staircase landing, Viola caught up. “Seraphina, did I do something wrong? Why are you ignoring me?”

She sounded humble and sincere, but her eyes were full of disdain.

She couldn’t understand how some girl from a no-name family could possibly compare to someone like her. Seraphina stopped and turned slowly. Her lips curled into a calm, mocking smile.

“I’m not ignoring you. I just don’t think you’re worth my time.”

Viola gasped and covered her mouth, about to launch into an act.

“You-”

“Just a suggestion-try being a person for once, instead of a full-time manipulative bitch.”

She walked away without looking back. Viola stood frozen, teeth clenched, her eyes flashing with fury.

Fine.No more playing nice.

Later that afternoon, Asha messaged, “Word is, Voidflame Herb might show up soon at a private underground auction in Valedawn.”

But the place was heavily guarded-access required an invite from someone in the loop.

Seraphina didn’t hesitate. She decided to go scout it out.

She was walking down the street when a group of thugs suddenly jumped out and blocked her path.

“That’s her.”

A breeze swept past, lifting a few strands of hair from her face, revealing delicate features so striking the gang froze.

Damn.

She’s gorgeous.

Their leader snapped out of it first, smacking one of them on the head. “You morons! What are you gawking at? Do your damn job!”

The rest of them finally snapped out of their trance. They wiped the drool off their faces.

Trying to act cool, the leader ran a finger down the bridge of his nose and shoved his hands in his pockets, swaggering over.

“Sorry, sweetheart. It’s nothing personal. Someone paid us to rough you up. Gotta make a living, you know?”

Seraphina rubbed her temple, bored.

Perfect timing. I’m just looking for something to do.

“Go for it.”

The front guy charged with a punch aimed right at her face. Seraphina tilted her head, dodged effortlessly, grabbed his arm, and flipped him.

He hit the concrete face-first. His nose might’ve shattered. His scream echoed down the block.

“Shit! She knows how to fight-hard!” the boss barked. “What are you waiting for? Get her!”

One glance at her opening move, and they knew she was the real deal.
