Chapter 42 No Bargaining Power

Miranda glanced back at the warm, cheerful table behind her and softened her tone.

“Just say it. What do you want?” she said. “What will it take for you to stop. To give up on going back to Vale Estate. To stop interfering with Lyanna’s engagement.”

Seraphina almost laughed. She suddenly felt like having a bit of fun.

Her eyes flicked deliberately toward the dining table, and she took a step in that direction.

Lyanna went pale instantly.

She panicked and started stripping off her jewelry. Necklace. Earrings. Bracelet.

Afraid it still wouldn’t be enough, she reached over and yanked the thick gold chain off Miranda’s neck.

Miranda yelped in pain.

“Seraphina, take it,” Lyanna said quickly. “All of it. You can have everything.”

“If that’s not enough, just give me a number,” she added hurriedly. “I’ll transfer the rest later.”

Miranda trembled with rage but didn’t dare lash out. Her eyes stayed glued to the jewelry, full of reluctance.

Lyanna shot her a look. Agree first. Get through this. Deal with it later.

Miranda finally caught on. She forced a smile and nodded vigorously. “Right. Just name the amount. I’ll send it tonight.”

Seraphina’s gaze stayed calm and clear as she looked at the pile of cheap gold.

Her lips curved slightly. She saw through them completely. A stalling tactic.

When Seraphina didn’t respond, Miranda grew nervous.

“Just take it,” she urged. “These are worth a lot. Don’t look down on them. You could sell them and live off it for a while.”

“Yes,” Lyanna added quickly. “If you ever need help later, just message me. Don’t show up like this again. okay?”

That word, again, was doing a lot of work.

She stepped forward, trying to press the jewelry into Seraphina’s hands.

The smell hit first. Sweat. Oil. Metal.

Seraphina stepped back instinctively. Miranda wore that chain daily as a status symbol. It was filthy.

Miranda finally snapped.

“What do you want, Seraphina? Don’t push your luck. Worst case, we all go down together. You won’t ge anything out of it either.”

“Sure,” Seraphina said lightly, a cold smile on her lips. “If we’re going down, I’ll make sure you’re dragged

with me.”

Miranda shook with fury.

“Seraphina…” Lyanna started again.

Seraphina cut her off. Her eyes were bright, her voice flat.

“Leave. Say one more word and you’ll regret it.”

Both women froze. It took a moment for the threat to sink in.

“Okay. We’re leaving. Right now.”

They turned and walked away quickly, glancing back again and again to make sure Seraphina wasn’t following.

At that moment, a voice called out behind her.

“Seraphina.”

Tyler had been waiting too long. Cassian’s presence alone was enough to suffocate the room. He finally lost patience and came looking for her.

The mother and daughter turned just in time to see a rough-looking, broad-shouldered man with dark skin and sloppy clothes calling out from a distance.

Seraphina turned back and replied casually, “Coming.”

Miranda and Lyanna exchanged a look. There was unmistakable glee in their eyes.

They hadn’t heard clearly. Only caught one word. Something that sounded like babe.

But with the noise and distance, it easily sounded like something else.

Their conclusion was immediate. She’d married him. Of all people.

Their lips curled in quiet satisfaction. So that was her life now.

Back in the private room, the dishes were already served.

Cassian looked up. “Did something happen?”

Seraphina took her seat, expression calm.
