They sat across from each other, skipping introductions entirely. Each ordered a coffee and made casual conversation.
Ten minutes passed quickly.
Cassian’s phone, resting on the table, began vibrating nonstop. He glanced at the screen and declined the call.
Moments later, the screen lit up again, buzzing insistently.
“You look busy,” Seraphina said calmly. “We can stop here for today.”
She stood, ready to leave.
Cassian reacted instantly, reaching out and grabbing her wrist. He spoke quickly, almost urgently. “Work stuff. Give me one minute. I’ll handle it.”
He stood and stepped outside to take the call.
“Mr. Drayven, the ten minutes are up,” Victor said.
“And?” Cassian replied, his voice low and clearly irritated.
Victor’s eyes widened as he stared at the phone. Had he heard that right?
Because just this morning, Cassian himself had said the meeting would start in ten minutes sharp, no delays, no excuses.
So why the sudden change now?
“That meeting is canceled,” Cassian said flatly, then hung up.
He adjusted his jacket in the mirror, composed himself, and pushed the door open. Inside, Seraphina had just finished a call.
She held her phone loosely in her right hand and studied him from the side, her gaze sharp with curiosity. “You’re not my blind date.”
The man arranged by her parents had just called to apologize. He already had someone he liked. He wouldn’t be coming. And he’d asked her to help keep his absence quiet.
“So why are you here,” she asked, arms folded. “And pretending to be him.”
Cassian pressed his tongue against the inside of his cheek. He hadn’t expected to be exposed this fast.
He gave up pretending, walked over, and sat down openly. “Bad intentions, calculated moves, attraction at first sight. Pick whichever description fits best.”
Seraphina’s lips curved slightly. “That many negative labels. Trying to earn sympathy?”

“This is called stepping back to move forward.”
She took a sip of coffee, unbothered. “Then explain why you were here.”

Cassian’s expression sobered, his gaze deepening. “I was here to discuss business. I saw you sitting here by coincidence. I asked the server and found out you were waiting for a blind date, so I took the seat. Fair and square.”
He lied. If he admitted he was also here on a blind date, she might have walked out on the spot. She already thought he was too old.
He couldn’t afford to stack more strikes against himself, especially not the suspicion of playing two sides.
Seraphina nodded lightly, unfazed. “Calculated turns into honesty. That deserves some credit.”
Cassian immediately perked up, his eyes warm. “And how do you plan to reward that.”
She tilted her head. “Dinner.”
He’d paid last time. It was only fair to return the favor.
She’d been dragged out early this morning for the blind date and hadn’t even eaten breakfast.
Cassian read her thoughts instantly and rejected the idea outright. “Dinner is fine. But I’m paying.”
Trying to go even with me? Not happening in this lifetime.
Victor waited in the car. Then he saw Cassian walk out with a woman.
