Lyanna stared toward the car in shock and pointed. “Damian, is that Seraphina? Who’s the man with her?”

She wasn’t the only one who saw it. Damian saw it too.

He hadn’t seen Seraphina for just a few days, yet she seemed completely different. Her features looked sharper, more striking, and her whole presence stood out effortlessly, the kind that made people look twice without knowing why.

His brows knitted together, irritation slipping into his voice. “Yeah. It’s her.”

“And the guy?” Lyanna asked, curiosity creeping in. “Who is he?”

Damian felt a sour twist in his chest and answered unwillingly, “Zachary.”

What?Zachary? How does Seraphina even end up with a guy like him?

Lyanna suddenly remembered the man she’d seen with Seraphina at the hotel before. Weak, unimpressive, the kind of man who barely held himself together. Then there was that other time, when she saw Seraphina working at a restaurant, cleaning tables.

Obviously, the husband couldn’t make money.

So Seraphina had gone out to trade on her looks instead. Part of Lyanna felt satisfied seeing Seraphina fall this far.

But the problem was who she’d ended up with. Zachary.

That lodged in Lyanna’s throat and wouldn’t go down. It made her deeply uncomfortable.

The driver expanded the rear seating area. A small table rose automatically between the seats. Drinks were neatly arranged, and the temperature adjusted to the most comfortable setting.

After everything was set, the driver stepped out and waited by the car.

“You really know how to shock people,” Zachary said, deliberately emphasizing the word shock.

The first time they met, she’d stunned him with her sharp eye for detail. The second time, she’d suddenly appeared as an old acquaintance of his grandfather.

Now this. Each meeting revealed a different side of her, yet made her harder to read.

Young, but wrapped in a sense of mystery that refused to fade.

Seraphina replied casually, “I’ll take that.”

No false modesty needed. She deserved it.

“How did you two meet?” Zachary asked.

“By chance.”

“What did you talk about?”

“Something I’m not sharing.”

“And you-”

Zachary tried to keep going, but Seraphina cut him off without hesitation, a faint curve at her lips. “None of your business.”

Again.

Zachary felt his patience wearing thin. He took a deep breath. Fine. If she wouldn’t say it, he’d have someone look into it.

His family didn’t lack intelligence channels.

In Valedawn, there were only two kinds of things. Things he wanted to know. And things he chose not to

know.

Right now, the priority was the upcoming appraisal competition.

Zachary adjusted smoothly. He poured two cups of coffee, one filled slightly more than the other.

“Please,” Zachary said. “Have some.”

“Thanks.” Seraphina replied. She lifted the cup, blew lightly over the surface, and took a small sip.

Smooth, rich, with a lingering aftertaste.

“Good coffee,” she said.

Zachary seized the opening at once, smiling easily. “If you like it, I can have someone send a case to your place.
