Chapter 123
I come back downstairs to a mess. Heather is running around playing tag with Walker, whose clearly won her over. And Cole has Griffon on the ground showing him how to get out of a headlock. While everybody else seems to be having the time of their lives watching them. I walk further into the kitchen to tell Amy about her appointment and she’s starting on dishes with her back turned to me. I move to help and gather the plates on the table, I see hers and there’s barely any food taken off the plate. I try to ignore this sinking feeling in my stomach, as I gather the rest of the dishes.
After I throw away the food left on the plates and bag up the leftovers throwing them in the fridge, I go place the dishes next to her by the sink. She says thank you, but she won’t look up at me. “Hey.” I say as I pull her chin and force her to look at me. There are tears rolling silently down her cheeks, but she doesn’t attempt to move my hand. She won’t look me directly in the eye, but I can feel her body soften as I hold her. “I know you’re worried, but we’ll protect you. We’ll protect all of you.” I tell her and she closes her eyes and moves her chin from my fingers. “It’s not just that… This is something I’ve dreamed about since they were born. I wanted them here surrounded by their village; it just wasn’t safe. And to come here and see how happy everybody is, how happy our kids are, it’s just going to make it that much harder.” She says as she looks up guiltily into my
eyes.
I don’t plan on letting them leave, but it’d be easier if she agreed to stay. “Then don’t go, Amy. Stay. Let us figure out all of this together.” She looks down and grips the side of the sink hard. When she looks up, her tears are gone and she has a stoic face, “Let’s just enjoy what time we have. We can talk about this later. You told the kids you’d take them to the creek.” She smiles slightly and pushes me towards the living room.
The kids convinced all of us but my parents to go to the creek. I have one on each hand racing ahead of me like they know where they’re going, granted maybe they do, they’re pretty darn smart. Walker and Cole flank me and Dallas is staying back with Amy and Mia. I can see them talking, but I can’t quite hear them.
We make it to the creek and Amy instantly goes to sit on a boulder to the side to watch, she already looks exhausted. The kids are playing near the water, when Cole starts a mud fight with them for old times sake. We watch humorously, as Cole pretends to be taken out by the two. Amy’s watching their every move, but the closer I look she’s only looking at their arms.
Dallas told me their bracelets are like her necklace, she’s making sure they don’t fall off. Every once in a while, she’ll scan the surrounding area looking for threats. I go to sit down next to her on the boulder and she looks at me slightly before turning to watch the kids again. “Aims, we’ll keep them safe. Just relax a little. Okay?” I try and comfort her. She chuckles humorlessly, which makes me frown. She doesn’t trust us to keep them safe. She looks back at my face and must see the sadness written on it. “Look Liam, it has nothing to do with if I believe you could protect them or not. I know you’ve only known them a day and would give your life for them. It’s him, he always finds us. Even with the protective bracelets and necklace, he always seems to find us…” She pauses and looks over at Heather, “It’s why she’s so scared of men. She came face to face with him once. It terrified her, if it wasn’t for Griffon, none of us would be alive right now.” She explains sadly, and I just look at my boy in awe. He protected his family.
I feel so much anger that he got so close to my baby girl, but I try to hide it since they’re right here. “We need to talk about everything, Amy. I want to know everything. We’ll have the conversation after your appointment today.” I say with finality, I need to know everything’s she’s had to deal with.
She looks at me confused, “You may be able to trick some people into believing you’re okay. But you can’t pretend with me, you need to see a doctor.” I tell her and she looks down and starts picking at the boulder. ”
