I watch as Amy crouches to the ground in pain. Her screams, like knifes stabbing my heart. Dallas and I surround her trying to calm her, but it’s not working. It’s just like last time she let the anger take over, but this time feels different. Like she’s in even more pain, if that’s possible.
Nick starts to walk over to us, to help her, and I let out a loud growl. “You will not touch her!” I shout, he steps back, but looks at her worriedly. Dallas’s mate or not, he put my family in danger. I can see in Dallas’s face he’s perplexed. He’s always felt protective of Amy, and his mate put her in clear danger in name of protection.
Mia runs over with the sleeping pill we used last time and starts trying to put it in Amy’s mouth. She can’t do it, Amy’s mouth is clenched shut. Last time we were able to talk to her, but this time it’s like she can’t speak or hear us. I’m staring at Amy, wondering how I’m going to force her mouth open, when my dad comes out of no where stabbing her in the arm.
I watch Amy slowly fall limp in my arms and look up at my dad. “I had a batch of tranquilizers set aside after last time. I figured if it kept happening it’d only get worse.” My dad says looking over at Amy sadly. Once my brain finally has time to catch up, I start looking around frantically. The kids! Mia sees my face and puts her hand on my shoulder, “Walker and Cole took them inside as soon as Dallas said Nick was his mate. They didn’t want them to see ‘anything’ if it started.” She says, wiggling her eyebrows. Good! I’m so happy they didn’t witness any of this.
I hate that I can’t be happy for my friend right now. He deserves a mate, but unfortunately, I hate his mate. I pick up Amy and start walking inside. I feel Dallas following me, but I turn around. “Bring your mate to the office, we need answers.” I say as calmly as I can, snarling at Nick. He’s bent on the ground picking up whatever Amy had in her hands before she attacked him.
I walk inside with a limp Amy. “Mommy!” Both the kids say in unison. “Did mommy have another episode?” Griffon asks looking up at me. I nod and carry her up the stairs with the kids following. I lay her on the bed and cover her with the blanket. Both the kids cuddle up next to her face, making me wonder how often this has happened. They see me watching them, “Mommy says our scent calms her.” Heather whispers, laying her hand on Amy’s face.
I close my eyes, trying to calm myself. These kids had to grow up so fast. I wonder how often they were able to be kids, always being on the run. I open my eyes seeing them pushing their heads into each side of her neck, getting cuddled in, to take a nap with her. I sigh and call Walker over mind-link to guard the door and I head for the office.
When I walk in, Nick is sitting in one of the chairs in front of my desk. Dallas is standing behind my desk, his hand covering his mouth as he watches me nervously. I go sit down at the desk running my hand over my face in frustration. If he wasn’t Dallas’s mate, he’d be dead right now.
After a few minutes, I glare up at Nick, he looks guilty. “Tell me everything you know.” I say, low and hard. I don’t even want to be talking to him, I’d rather him be in the dungeons, but he knows more about Amy’s time away then I do.
Hours later, he finishes as I just stare at him. Then he looks up at me and throws the binder that Amy had on the desk in front of me. “That’s everything we have. We were close, but there was something missing.” He says as he looks at the binder sadly. I look down and start going through it. She’s been looking for a way to stop him. It’s the spell that changed him into the monster he became. The places he’s hit in the last three hundred years. Birth certificates and death certificates of all the families he’s had, even one that was born after Amy. Even a
