Chapter 233
*Two years later*
‘Screams echo through the hall and my fist clench, and my jaw tightens.
I can’t scream, I can’t yell, that only seems to make things worse. I look around the cell looking for a way out. Looking for a weapon. Something I’ve done so many times, I know there’s nothing, but I have to find something.
A warm hand lands on my shoulder, but I don’t follow it, I just continue to stare down the hall, praying to the Goddess they’ll stop this.’
My body shoots up into an upright position, as sweat coats my skin and my breathing comes harder. A week, it’s been a week of dreaming the same dream. The echoes of screams resonate in my soul, and I can’t make this feeling disappear.
I have to do something.
I get out of bed and start packing my bag.
Once it’s morning and I hear my mom and dad downstairs in the kitchen, I follow the scent of bacon and make my way downstairs.
A year and a half and this house still doesn’t feel like home. It’s not home, but home isn’t a place we can go.
It’s a place no one smart would ever go.
And that’s one reason my stride slows, because I know my parents won’t be happy about my
decision.
I get down the stairs and slowly make my way to the kitchen my bag in hand.
My parents look up at me with smiles on their faces. They don’t feel it. None of us have felt like smiling since it all happened, but their putting on facades for today.
“Happy birthday!” My mom shouts, starting to walk over to me for a hug, but stopping midway as she sees my bag.
She swallows, then looks into my eyes with a knowing look.
“You can’t,” She begs me, already knowing where I plan to go. I look at her sadly, “It’s time.” I whisper and I hear my dad’s chair scrape across the floor and he comes to stand next to mom.
His eyes sadden as he takes in the bag in my hand and the look on my face.
I’m not changing my mind.
He wraps his arm around my mom’s shoulder and pulls her closer to him. “You’ll call every night. I swear you miss one call and I’ll storm the pack.” He tells me sternly and I stand a little straighter giving him a curt nod.
I look over my parents, the people who have love and protected me. Left their pack to make sure I stay safe. “I love you guys.” I tell them, and my mom opens her arms and I instantly rush over to them.
She wraps me up tightly as my dad wraps us both in his.

We finally pull apart and I look at them. “I’ll be home soon. This is just something I have to do.” I tell them and they nod, understanding. Even if they’d rather keep me locked up here.
But I’m eighteen now. I can leave. I can go and hopefully fix the mess our life has become.
I stay to eat breakfast with them, and then say our goodbyes. As I’m about to leave Nick walks in the door.
His face is fallen and broken, just like it always is. He’s never recovered from his and Dallas’s fallout. He just goes to work, then his room, I swear I never even see him eat.
His eyes race over my face and he stops, blocking my path and looking into my eyes. “You’re going back?” He asks, and I nod. His face rushes through a mix of emotions before he gives me a curt nod and walks around me heading for his room. “Happy birthday, Aspen.” He whispers right before he starts walking downstairs.
I take a deep breath, maybe I can fix that too.
Then I walk out the door.
I make my way to my favorite coffee shop in this pack, and order my drink, then sit down waiting.
She’s only a minute late, but when she sees I’ve bought my own drink she doesn’t look happy. I smile, stopping her before she can chastise me, “Hey, if you wanted to buy my drink you’d have shown up on time for once.”
She glares at me, then rushes over to me giving me a tight hug. “Happy birthday, Aspen.” She says and I smile, thanking her.
Still hiding my bag under my legs. Out of everybody she’s the one I’m most worried about. She lost everybody that day.
Her brother may not be dead, but he might have well been killed along side Liam and Amy. He’s not been the same since that day.
The only thing that makes me think there’s even a spark of his old self inside him is the fact he let me, and my parents leave without retaliating.
She grabs her own coffee and sits down opposite from me, and I reach my hands out to grab hers.
“Heather…” I start and she instantly starts shaking her head. “You can’t. He’ll kill you, or hurt you, or lock you up. You don’t know what he’ll do. Please, Aspen. Please stay!” She begs already knowing where this
onversation was going.
I shake my head. “I’m sorry, Heather. I have to go.” I tell her and tears start to fall from her eyes. I give her as much of a smile as I can muster and look into her eyes.
“I’m going to fix this. I’m going to fix all of this. But I need your help.”
