Chapter 234
I tried to listen to music to calm my nerves as I drove to the pack, but it wasn’t helping.
‘This is important.’ My wolf Alex says into my mind, and I nod agreeing. She misses our old life too. She misses running through the forest of the pack with her best friends.
I want to help Griffon and I will if I can, but he’s not the reason I’ve come here. We have bigger plans, bigger more important goals.
I see the wall that towers one hundred feet into the air come into view and my teeth clench. We’re almost there.
My wolf walks in circles in my mind. She knows we need to do this, but this is a huge risk. If we get caught; I don’t think it’ll matter what I meant to him once upon a time.
The looming gates cast in the blackest cloud I’ve ever seen stands before me and I bring my car to a stop. It’s gotten so much worse.
The sun shines brightly, but I can tell I’ll be cast into black the second I make it through those gates. Good thing I can see in the dark.
One of the guards walks over to me, and his eyes widen. “Aspen? What are you doing here?” He asks, and I smile at him. “Hey, Cameron. I’m here to see the Alpha.” I tell him.
His
eyes
widen and he looks around before his gaze meets mine again. “You need to leave.” He whispers, his gaze shooting around like he’ll get caught.
My heart breaks even more with how scared he is.
I shake my head, “I need to see him.” I tell him again more sternly.
He takes a breath and with a curt nod of his head, he walks back over to his post and gets on the phone.
He talks to someone for what feels like a lifetime, his eyes continuing to dart to mine nervously.
He was a warrior when I left. He was always one of the stronger ones and to see how nervous he is to see me here does nothing to help this fear snaking it’s way up my spine.
He finally hangs up the phone and walks back to my car. He opens my door as I stare at him like he’s crazy. He smirks, “No outside cars aloud.” He tells me and I nod before grabbing my bag from the front seat and jumping out of my car.
I hand him the keys, “Don’t fuck it up.” I tell him and he laughs, “I’ll do my best.” He jokes and I start to follow him through the doors to the right of the gates.
I look around as I walk. We haven’t even made it inside yet, but the level of security on this place is insane. It’s like he’s afraid of the entire world.
I look over at Cameron as he looks through my bag, “How’s everything going?” I ask him and his whole body stiffens as he glances up at me. With a shrug he responds, “Fine.”
My teeth clench, but I just keep silent. I don’t want to get him in trouble, and clearly, he doesn’t want to say anything bad for fear of retribution.

As soon as we finally walk out into the pack, my heart sinks.
It doesn’t have the same feel or look anymore. The houses are the same, but they all seem duller, there’s no life here.
The man walking over to me, doesn’t smile, doesn’t even flinch after not seeing me for a year and a half, but I guess I shouldn’t expect him to.
Dallas changed after walking out of the cell that day. His heart blackened along with Griffon’s.
“Aspen.” Dallas says curtly, and I give him a nod. “What’s up, Dallas?” I ask, trying to keep things as casual as possible.
He doesn’t acknowledge my question, just nods his head in the direction of the main house and turns expecting me to follow.
We start walking, but I can’t take the silence. “Soooo… What’s new?” I ask him, and he glances at me before turning forward again. Clearly, deciding I’m not worthy of his time.
I can’t believe so much has changed since we left. The fear in everyone’s eyes as they refuse to wave back at me. This place is a prison.
We walk passed the leader’s street and I glance behind me to see the houses, then look back up at Dallas. “Where are we going?” I ask and Dallas sighs, like I’m annoying him. “You wanted to see the Alpha?” He asks, and I nod glancing back at where I expected him to be. Dallas grunts, “Well, he’s at home.” He says.
I decide to drop it. He clearly doesn’t want to be forthcoming. He knows I thought his home was back there.
We walk past Main Street. I see a few of the businesses have closed down and then when I look at the park the blood drains from my face.
It’s no longer a park. It’s a… Stage?
Silver shackles placed along the stage. The smell of blood hits my nose and I nearly vomit. What do they do to people here?
Things were bad before we left, but this is… This is a whole new level.
I tear my eyes away from the stage and continue to follow Dallas.
