Chapter 28

I grab them from her, “I’ll help you bring these, then I’ll come back and join them in the gym.” I say just wanting to be over there already.

We get over to Amy’s house and I set down the casseroles. Heather thanks me but is having trouble looking at my mom. I can feel the tension between the two which is extremely unusual. I say my goodbyes knowing they wouldn’t tell me if something was wrong. Which has me worried. I walk to the door and look at our mom’s, neither one is paying attention to me, so I pretend to walk out the door and shut it. I then race upstairs to check on Amy and make sure she’s okay.

I get to her door, and it’s cracked open slightly. I peek inside and see her sleeping peacefully on her bed. She looks the same, her breathing is even. I wonder what the tension was about then? I walk slowly down the stairs and look towards the kitchen and see mom and Heather standing outside the sliding back door arguing. It’s cracked open slightly, but I can barely hear them with there whispered voices. I open up my mind-link to the guys, so they can see what I’m seeing. “Julia! If she were dying, I’d do it. I swear, but she’s not. She’ll heal, it’ll just take a bit longer. We can’t risk it, and you know it.” Heather whisper yells at my mom. My mom sighs and talks calmly, “She’s old enough to know anyway. You need to tell her. What if this was an attack from him? Are you just going to leave her defenseless, without knowing what threat is out there for her?” My mom finishes, pleading to Heather with her eyes. Heather looks down, seemingly thinking about my moms’ words. When she looks up there’s tears streaming down her face. My mom puts her hand on Heather’s shoulder, “I know it won’t be easy, H. But she won’t always have protection, you know she wants to leave as soon as she graduates. She doesn’t even want the boys anywhere near her right now, if she runs away from them, they can’t help. They don’t even know the level of threat she’s under. They don’t know how much protection she needs, they’re all still kids. They aren’t thinking about that, they’re just going to be upset that she doesn’t want to see them. She needs to know, and she needs to learn how to protect herself, even if you’re not willing to let her use it.” My mom finishes and embraces her in a hug.

I walk out of the house in a fuzz. What danger is she in? Why won’t her mom tell her she’s in danger? I sit down on the front porch not willing to get to far away from her, especially after the new information we have. All the guys surround me immediately. “What were they talking about?” Dallas asks quietly, I look up at him and shrug. “Nothing they said was clear, other than the fact she needs protection.” I look up at all of them. “I don’t care that she doesn’t want to see us. I don’t care if we have to watch from the shadows. She doesn’t go unprotected, ever.” I stare intently at each of them, they all nod their heads in agreement.

Dallas chuckles beside me, I look up at him confused. He smiles, “Well, I guess I deserved this black eye. We really don’t know for sure who did this to her.” He’s smiling, but I can see the fury swirling around in his eyes. I stand and pat him on the back, “Come on, lets go to the gym.” I look back at Cole and Walker and they both nod and get into position around the house, preparing to stand guard.
