Chapter 291
I look down at him, “Why? You’ve never been in my face about being an Alpha. Why now? Why can’t you accept that it’s not something I want?” I ask him and his eyes move slowly up to mine.
“Because you may not have a choice. I don’t have time to look for an Alpha that can take over. Walker doesn’t want the job, so that leaves my son.” He tells me, and I look back at Walker.
“So, you’ll force me, but not the clear better choice? We all know Walker would make a better Alpha, and the pack would stand behind him.” I say as calmly as I can.
“It’s your birthright. Not his, I can’t force him to become an Alpha. Alpha blood runs through your veins. You won’t be able to turn your back on the pack if they need you.” He tells me and I shake my head.
“It doesn’t matter. You’re not going to die. You’ll make it through this.” I tell him and he shakes his head. ” Prepare for the worse.” Is all he says, and I continue to shake my head.
“I can’t lose you again. Don’t you get it? I can’t have you guys come back and then lose you again. I won’t.” I respond and he looks up at me with a small smile.
“You’ll be fine. You’ve learned from your mistakes, and you’ll be fine.” He says wistfully, like he’s sure it’ll happen.
I look back at my dad, as I think about Aspen. About living without her in this world, and the thought tears at my heart, until it feels like it’s bleeding. We don’t even share the full bond, but I can see where they’re coming from. I can’t imagine how bad it would hurt to have her ripped from this world with the full bond in place.
“You need to stay strong, son. Last time you felt you had nothing, but this time… You have a mate to protect. You won’t make the same mistakes; she won’t let you.”
‘She won’t let you.’ My mate won’t allow me to become the monster I did last time. Maybe I could do this.
