Chapter 314
My eyes slide to Amy, sitting in her new recliner chair next to the bars. Her eyes on the screen but not really watching the movie.
Finn glances at me, then his eyes follow mine. He purses his lips, ‘This is stupid. Us trying to pretend like everything is normal, while she’s locked in a cell.’ He mind-links, and my eyes move to Liam sitting next to her, his hand locked around hers through the bars. His eyes not moving from her face.
I swallow down the tears that want to come when I see the pain in his eyes. “They’re trying. There’s nothing we can do right now anyway. What’s it hurt to try?’ I ask him.
‘Randy and I could be helping my mom.’
I run my hand through my hair. ‘You guys are barely trained and Renolds witch should be here tomorrow. She’ll be more helpful than you guys.’
‘Rude.’ He sneers, but when I look up at him, he’s smirking. I smile, ‘What can you do?’ I ask him, and his smirk widens. ‘I’d show you, but Griffon will probably kill me. He’s already staring at me like he wants to break my neck. Can you imagine if I broke out my powers?’ He jokes.
My eyes move to Griffon next to Liam, his glare is set on Finn with intensity. I laugh out loud, causing everyone to look at me. My face blushes, but it doesn’t stop the laughter.
It just makes it worse.
Finn starts to join me, while everyone stares at us, not having any insight on our joke.
“Sorry.” I rasp, then get up to leave so I can compose myself.
Finn and Griffon, both follow me. Once we’re down the hall a little way, I lean up against the wall. My head falls back, and Finn leans next to me, while Griffon stands in front of the two of us.
I stop laughing and turn towards Finn. ‘He’s trying.’ I tell him, and Finn nods. ‘I know.’ He whispers, somber and unresolved, like he’d rather Griffon not be trying. Like it’d be easier to just continue hating him.
Maybe it would be.
“I’m really trying to keep it together, but this secret conversation is about to make me explode.” Griffon says, and we both turn towards him and start laughing.
Griffon’s serious face doesn’t change, making us laugh harder. I grab his hand, “That was mostly the point, Griffy. Don’t worry.” I laugh, and Griffon’s eyes narrow.
I roll my eyes, “Come on. We should get back.” I tell them, not letting go of Griffon’s hand.
He maneuvers his hand to intertwine with mine.
I glance down at our hands. It feels so nice to be next to him. Close to him. I’m never far from him, but we’re definitely not like most freshly mated pairs.
Hell, even old ones. My mom and dad still never want to leave each other. We walk back into the room; a feeling of stillness overtakes me. My eyes meet Amy’s right before they roll to the back of her head and she falls back. I feel Griffon’s hand leave mine right before his arms wrap around my waist and everything goes black.
When the darkness clears, I’m standing in a world on fire… Literally. The whole pack, burnt to ashes. Bodies littering the streets, and Amy standing in the middle of a torn-up street.
