I sit on the ground, my back against the wall, already having exhausted all the thoughts I’ve had about escaping.
I don’t know what to do. I don’t know how to help her… My eyes slide to Amy.
The witch hasn’t moved.
Hasn’t talked, since our last conversation.
Just sitting there… Watching me…
It’s creepy, knowing your best friend is in there, but that’s not who’s looking at you.
“What’s your plan?” I finally ask. I’ve been scared to hear the answer.
Her eyes widen slightly, like she’s coming from a trance, then she looks towards the door.
She turns back to me, “Don’t worry, Dallas. I’ll get us out.” She tells me, like that’s all the answer I need.
My eyes slide to the iron wrapped around her wrist. When I look back up, she’s smiling. “I’m stronger than even you realize.” She whispers.
The door down the hall opens up and my head swings to it. The same woman walks down the hall and to my cell.
I don’t get a single word out before she raises her hand and a cloud of green smoke fills my vision and everything goes black.
—
My eyes blink open, the night sky coming into view. Stars shining, but a shade of red coating the sky.
My body jolts up. It’s not the red moon yet! It can’t be!
I finally look around me, people surrounding me, but no one’s looking at me.
No. They’re all turned in one direction, soft chanting leaving their lips.
Witches.
I stand up to see what their all looking at, and the chains around my wrists tell me, I not going anywhere.
I turn to glare at her. “It’s not that simple.”
Her tongue ticks, “It is. I understand what she means to you. What she means to all of you. That’s why were trying this first. We know she’s important. But, Dallas… Her life isn’t worth every other living one.”
I shake my head. “We still have time. We don’t have to kill her. There’s still time.” I tell her, then look up at the sky, wondering how long exactly I’ve been unconscious.
Her gaze follows mine. “It’s because of the spell. The blood moon hasn’t risen.” She tells me.
I look back at her. “What are you guys doing?”
“The only thing we can do.” She tells me. I shake my head. “If this doesn’t work… There has to be something else. You guys don’t care about her, so you don’t understand. Imagine it’s your mom, you brother, your child. Would you give up so easily?”
Her eyes look into mine with pity. “I am thinking about my brother, my mother, my child… That’s why we need to end this. Everyone here has someone to protect.”
I don’t say anything. I know they’re not wrong in their thoughts. We just see things differently.
My eyes travel back to Amy. “Dallas, we know Amy isn’t a bad person. We all know she doesn’t deserve this. But unfortunately, in this case… It doesn’t matter.”
