Chapter 56

Mia and I leave Liam’s to go get a couple last minute things for Cole’s birthday party tomorrow. We’re walking around the store. “So, Amy, what’s the holdup?” Mia asks me out of no where. I look around to see if there’s something I’m not seeing. I look at her confused, she rolls her eyes. “You and Liam. Why haven’t you two gone all the way yet?” She clarifies my mouth goes into a o shape finally understanding. I turn my head and grab a blow horn off the shelve, and turn back to her. “It’s not like I don’t want to, but there’s actually a couple reasons.” She urges me to continue with her eyes, I roll my eyes again looking around to make sure Dallas is still across the store. “First, it seems like every time we get to that point, he pulls away… I’m not sure he wants to.” She rolls her eyes, “Amy, he’s a teenage boy, he wants to do it.” I look down embarrassed to be talking about this.

“And?” She urges me. “I’m scared, okay? He has a mate out there somewhere, and when I think about Liam and I, I don’t think about it just being a fling. If we go all the way and then he finds his mate, I don’t even want to think about how I’d deal with that. Not to mention, it’s not like my human self can be his Luna. I feel like all of this is just setting me up for failure. Like, I’m setting myself up to have my heart broken, and if we don’t go all the way, maybe it won’t be as bad since I didn’t give him that part of me.” I answer, feeling the tears burning the back of my eyes.

She stands there looking over me for a minute, then pulls me in for a hug. “Oh, Amy.” She pulls away slightly so she can see my face, “I get it, but can you look at it a different way? Maybe, look at it as you are giving yourself to someone you’ve loved and has loved you since you were kids. The future is always uncertain, anything can happen. I mean you could both die tomorrow, and you’ll die a virgin.” She says and I push her away laughing. I roll my eyes at her and think to myself, maybe she’s not wrong. Maybe, if I think about it as losing my virginity to the boy I’ve loved forever instead of the reality of the future. Maybe, I can do this with little harm done.

Dallas walks over at that point smiling, holding a ton of silly string in his arms. I smile, knowing how much Cole will love being attacked by all this stuff. “Think we can keep this all a secret til tomorrow?” Dallas laughs as he throws all of it in the cart. I shrug, “Hopefully.”

The next day, my mom lets me skip over a lot of my schoolwork so I can help Julia set up for Cole’s party. Luckily, today’s Friday, so I have the weekend to keep myself on track. Granted, lately I haven’t wanted to leave as badly, but I know this is still not a place that’s safe for me. Eventually things will hit the fan here.

Julia stops me as I’m putting up streamers around the house, I’m secretly thankful, because my body is screaming at me after the training yesterday. Fifty push-ups were not easy, and then the training was brutal after. Hopefully, I can get remotely close to where I want to be soon. I know I’ll never catch up to the future leaders, but I just want to be able to defend myself a little bit.

“So… You and Liam have gotten a lot closer lately.” She smirks, looking away to set some plates down on the table. I smile, “Yeah?” She hasn’t really said anything about Liam and I, at least not to me. “I’m just so happy you guys were able to settle your differences.” She says, and I look away from her, not sure how to feel about it. We have settled the past, honestly things are better then ever. It doesn’t change the strong gut feeling I have that everything’s about to hit the fan soon though. Liam’s been great, but he still has a mate out there and I just feel like it’ll destroy me when she appears.

“Yeah, I’m glad we’ve worked through everything too.” I say not wanting to let her in on my thoughts. She notices my mood shift though, and seems to sense my worries. “Hey, anything can happen. Just live in the moment, you both deserve to be happy.” I smile, she’s right. I’m going to try not to think about it, until I have to.

Later that night, everybody’s at the house waiting for Liam to bring Cole inside. It’s not really a surprise that there’s a party, but we all have confetti, silly string and blow horns waiting for him.
