Eli’s expression changed almost imperceptibly, the color draining from his face before he forced himself back into composure. He stepped forward slightly, his voice lifting with a carefully crafted note of surprise.

“Edwin, you’re awake,” he said, the words carrying a strained warmth. “That’s… really good to hear.”
