For reasons I couldn’t fully explain, even after losing her wolf, she still carried herself with this unshakable, grounded confidence. It made her seem solid–someone you could lean on.
Maybe that was why, despite Odin’s disapproval, I kept finding myself pulled toward her. Sometimes I’d even catch myself imagining what it would be like to have her as my Luna someday.
She was steady, self–assured, and never backed down from a challenge. Having her nearby just… settled something in me, no matter how chaotic things got.
I was honestly glad the Sorens had sent her back then. Grateful it was her.
And I was relieved that when the news of our broken engagement broke, most of the blowback landed on me, sparing her the worst of it.
But her words-“Let’s call off the engagement“-every time they replayed in my head, they still felt like rival claws digging straight into my chest.
I knew she was young, that she hadn’t really woken up to romance yet. I also knew she wanted out to cut herself free from the Sorens‘ expectations and the weight of the engagement. And I agreed because I wanted what was right for her.
Still, it left me restless.
I’d always told myself Nira was only nineteen–still figuring things out. And I was willing to stay close, wait for her to grow into herself, wait for her feelings to catch up.
But now it felt like she was putting distance between us on purpose.
What was I supposed to do now?
While I was turning it all over in my head, Zane showed up with Briar in tow.
Zane didn’t bother with formalities–he barged right in, voice tense with concern. “Mr. Howell, what were you thinking? You’re crazy about her, so why break it off? Do you have any idea what everyone’s saying about you out there?
“Is this really because she doesn’t have a wolf? Come on, you know she used to be an Alpha’s daughter. Her bloodline’s pure. Your kids wouldn’t turn out weak.”
He was so worked up he’d even forgotten to bow.

But these two weren’t just my subordinates–they were my friends. I let it slide.

Before I could explain, Briar dipped his head respectfully and pulled Zane back. “Take it easy. Mr. Howell must have his reasons.”
I met their eyes and spoke carefully. “The engagement was never fair to her from the start. Besides, she’s still young. I didn’t want to tie her down with it.”
Zane ran a hand through his hair, frustrated. “She’s nineteen. If she still had her wolf, she could’ve found her mate by now. How is that too young?”
Briar shot him a warning look, and Zane went quiet.
“So what’s your plan now?” Briar asked.
I leaned back, keeping my tone even. “Just because the engagement’s off doesn’t mean we can’t get engaged again later.”
Zane stared at me for a second before his eyes widened with excitement. “Mr. Howell… are you saying you’re going to openly pursue Nira?”
I didn’t answer directly, just offered a faint smile.
Regardless of how Odin felt about it, my priority now was making sure she’d accept my feelings someday.
Briar watched me, a flicker of understanding in his gaze.
Zane caught on fast too, though his expression soon shifted to worry. “But, Mr. Howell… aren’t you afraid she might actually walk away? What if she… you know… falls for someone else?”
The mere idea made my jaw tighten, but I steadied myself quickly.
