Tessa leaned in close, lowering her voice so only I could hear. “Hang here for a bit, I need to step out.” Without waiting for a response, she straightened and slipped away into the crowd.
A few minutes later, Derrick came back from the restroom. The moment he realized Tessa wasn’t there, his expression tightened, and he looked straight at me.
“Where’d she go?”
“A staff member came and got her,” I said.
He immediately pulled out his phone and called her, but before he could say anything, the phone in my lap started vibrating. That was when I remembered, she had handed it to me earlier before going to dance because she didn’t want to carry it.
Derrick’s call didn’t go through, and the concern on his face quickly turned into something sharper, more urgent. His wolf ears flicked up, betraying just how anxious he was.
I stood up right away. “Let’s split up. We’ll call if we find anything.”
“Yeah.” Derrick didn’t hesitate and headed off in the opposite direction.
I drew a quiet breath and focused inward. “Lyra, sharpen my sense of smell.”
Following the faint trace Tessa had left behind in the air, I moved through the club, gradually leaving the loud, crowded floor behind. The music faded into the background as I followed the scent trail farther out, eventually reaching a quieter balcony area.
As I got closer, I caught a faint noise coming from inside.
I slowed my steps, cautious. “Tessa? Is that you?”
The moment I stepped in, there was a sharp click behind me.
The door locked.
Before I could turn fully, a strong wave of alcohol hit my nose, and a shadow lunged at me from behind.
Lyra reacted instantly. Colt.
I moved on instinct, shifting my body just in time. Colt missed and stumbled forward, crashing hard onto the ground with a heavy thud.
He groaned, pushing himself up, his eyes glowing red as he glared at me with raw hostility. “You little bitch, just as disgusting as Kade. Think I won’t rip you apart tonight?”
He staggered to his feet, unsteady but still aggressive, and came at me again.
By then, I had already realized what was going on. The door wasn’t just locked from the inside, someone had sealed it from the outside too.
“No point trying to run,” Colt sneered, staring at me like I was already cornered prey. “You think you can break that door? You don’t

even have a wolf. You’re nothing. That’s a joke.”
He let out a harsh, mocking laugh before his expression twisted with resentment.
“Ever since Kade woke up, he’s wiped out every last person I had in the pack’s leadership. I’ve got nothing left now!”
His gaze darkened as it fixed on me.
“And you just had to be his fiancée. He owes me, so you’re going to pay for it.”
His lips pulled back, sharp fangs fully exposed now as his voice turned vicious.
“Kade thinks he’s untouchable? Fine. Tonight I’ll take his fiancée and make him the biggest joke in the entire pack.”

Inside me, Lyra shifted into a combat–ready state, her presence surging forward. My hands tightened into fists at my sides, claws extending as I braced myself.
The second he lunged within range, I focused all that force into my arm and swung hard, driving my fist straight into the side of his head.
“Ah-!”
He cried out, collapsing to the ground, clutching his head in pain.
I shook out my hand lightly, then turned toward the door, ready to force it open myself when the door was thrown open from the
outside.
Tessa and Derrick rushed in.
“Nira, are you okay?” Tessa asked, her voice tight with worry as she looked me over.
Then she noticed Colt lying on the ground off to the side.
“What is he doing here? What happened?” she asked, confused.
Derrick didn’t speak, his narrowed gaze fixed on me, clearly trying to read the situation.
“I’m fine,” I said calmly. “I came in and found him here. Looks like he drank too much.”
I reached for Tessa’s hand and gave it a light tug. “It’s late. Let’s head out.”
“Oh… okay.” She followed, still a little puzzled but not pressing further.
Derrick came out with us.
As soon as we stepped outside, Tessa started venting, clearly furious. “That staff guy told me Derrick was in trouble, so I ran over, and next thing I knew I was locked in a room.”
