After he spoke, his wolf–like eyes narrowed once more, studying me with open suspicion. “Who are you? Why do you look so much like my aunt?”
“Your aunt?” Oscar turned to me, confused. “Natalie?”
I wasn’t sure how to respond. Everything I knew about Natalie and myself came from Lila’s version of the story–and that was only one side of it.
Kade moved smoothly in front of me, not making a big scene of it. “Desmond, how are you feeling?”
He deftly shifted the topic. “Do you remember what happened before you were poisoned?”
“Poisoned?” Desmond seemed to finally notice how weak his body felt.
He cradled his head, trying to recall. “I was at the winery that day, waiting for some friends. They never showed. Just as I was about to leave, men in black rushed in. After that… everything goes blank.”
“It was a rare neurotoxin,” Oscar explained, nodding toward me. “Ms. Soren here is the one who pulled you back.”
Desmond finally lowered his intense gaze. His expression softened as he looked at me and said sincerely, “Thank you, Ms. Soren.”
Then he turned to Kade and the others. “I owe all of you.”
“You might be thanking us too soon,” Kade replied coolly.
“What?” Desmond stared at him, confused.
Kade continued, “The police are outside looking for us. The charge is kidnapping the second son of the Hudson family.”
Desmond shot upright in bed. “What?”
A flush of anger spread across his pale face. “That’s bullshit.”
Oscar pulled out his phone and showed him the screen. “See for yourself. The warrant’s already been issue.“
Desmond stared at the warrant, his jaw tight. “What the hell is going on?”
Kade laid out how Richard had set us up. “That’s the long and short of it.”
Desmond listened, his frown deepening. After a moment, he spoke slowly, “Wait… If all it would take is one call from me to blow this whole thing apart, why would he set up something so flimsy?”
“Which only means he’s working with the ones who poisoned you,” Kade picked up. “That toxin–if Nira hadn’t been there, you’d
be dead.”
Desmond’s face hardened.
He stayed quiet for a long while before finally saying, “He’s the lead investigator on my family’s case… Could he be behind all of it? What does he actually want?”

That was exactly what I was wondering. And Oscar must’ve been on the same page, because he asked, “Did your family ever cross him somehow?”
Desmond shook his head slightly. “Not that I know of…”
Kade and I exchanged a glance. Desmond caught it and pressed, “Ms Soren, do you know something?
I hesitated. “It’s only speculation, really…”
Desmond’s tone was gentle but firm. “Just say it. I’ll check it out myself.”
So I went on. “Richard’s full name is Richard Dixon, right?”
Desmond nodded.

I continued, “Before we came to Meridia, we ran into someone–Lila Dixon.”
I skipped the part about her capturing me. “She told us she and your aunt Natalie were once in love with the same man. She’s held a grudge against your aunt ever since.”
“So you think Richard and Lila are working together?” Desmond looked down, thinking it over. “No wonder something happened to my aunt right after she left the Creekshade Pack…”
Hearing him confirm again that my birth mother was in trouble sent a chill through me. I leaned forward. “How is your aunt now? Have you heard anything?”
Maybe I sounded too invested for a stranger asking about Natalie, because Desmond gave me a curious look before answering quietly, “No. My uncle rushed there as soon as she disappeared. We haven’t heard from either of them since.”
My heart sank.
Kade put an arm around my shoulders, his voice calm and steady. “They’ll be alright.”
Just his tone made me feel a little steadier.
Oscar noticed the mood dipping and quickly jumped in. “Anyway, that’s not what matters right now. Desmond, you should call home. Once you do, whatever plan he’s got falls apart.”
“Right. I’ll call my dad.” Desmond took Oscar’s phone, dialed, and waited until the line picked up.
“Dad? It’s Desmond…” He stood up from the bed, his voice firm again.
