The second I was out of sight, Damon told Reese, the butler, to contact Emberhall and have a dress custom made.
Jenna was quick to object.
"Seriously? Janice hasn't even worn that yet. And now Nira—the disgrace who lost her wolf—is getting one? That girl doesn't deserve anything."
"What do you want me to do?" Damon snapped. "You want her showing up to the Howells looking like that? I'm not taking that kind of risk in front of the Alpha King's family."
Janice immediately switched into her usual fake kindness, giving Jenna a comforting smile.
"It's okay, Mom. Nira's been through a lot. Whatever she wears, I'll be fine."
"You're too nice," Aven growled. "She brought it all on herself. Who told her to go and kill someone?"
Janice flinched, just for a second. Her polished expression cracked, but she covered it quickly.
Damon never expected Emberhall to actually respond. He was already planning on using a backup dress from the mall. Just keeping up appearances.
Sure enough, Reese came back not long after. Damon didn't look surprised.
"No worries. I had someone grab something from the store."
But Reese didn't speak right away. His face twitched, like he didn't know how to say what came next.
After a moment, he gave a short bow. "Alpha, Emberhall said they'll deliver the dress personally."
"What?!" Janice's voice shot up in disbelief.
"You're sure they said that?"
"Yes," Reese said slowly, still looking like he couldn't believe it either. "The director confirmed it herself."
Jenna froze, stunned. But then a smile tugged at her lips. "Maybe they thought it was for Janice. That would explain it."
She grabbed Janice's hand, practically glowing with pride, like the dress was already hers.
Aven nodded along. "That's gotta be it. Didn't you go there for Janice's birthday gown?"
Leading the group was Vera Boyd herself, dressed in a sharp black suit that fit her like armor. Every movement of hers radiated elegance and precision. The force of her presence easily matched the high-ranking wolves flanking the room.
Jenna quickly fixed her hair and smoothed her clothes, plastering on a bright smile.
"Miss Boyd! You didn't need to come all this way. You could've just sent someone."
Janice stood nearby, her face flushed with anticipation, already picturing herself in something floor-length and sparkling.
But Vera only gave a polite nod, eyes calmly scanning the room.
"It's no trouble. Could someone show me to Miss Soren's room? I'd like to hand-deliver the gown."
Janice stepped forward, her smile confident. "No need. You can give it to me."
Vera stepped back slightly, her voice cool and clear.
"I'm afraid there's been a misunderstanding. This gown is for Nira Soren."
