The darkness remained undisturbed, but the sound of footsteps broke the silence, steady and unhurried, each step measured and
controlled.
Lyra focused immediately, confirming what I already sensed.
A young man.
The steps paused at the door, followed by the quiet creak of it opening.
I moved the instant the gap appeared, closing the distance in a blur and striking without hesitation.
He reacted just as quickly.
His body shifted to the side, narrowly avoiding my attack, and in the same motion, his hand came up, claws flashing as they went straight for my throat.
I bent backward, my body arching just enough to evade the strike by a fraction.
There was no pause.
The exchange turned sharp and relentless, each movement flowing into the next.
As the fight continued, a flicker of surprise surfaced in my mind. His movements were precise, controlled, and ruthlessly efficient, every strike aimed with intent.
I had been trained under the harshest conditions since childhood. Aside from my adoptive father, very few people could push me
this far.
And yet, he could. We clashed again, and in the same instant, both of us found an opening.
Our hands shot forward at the same time, fingers locking around each other’s throats.
We both went still, neither of us moving. If I had let Lyra take over, it would have ended right then, but I held back, at least for now.
My fingers shifted slightly, activating the mechanism hidden in my ring. The concealed needle slid into place, ready to strike.
Before I could act, he moved, avoiding it cleanly. Then his voice cut through the tension.
“Nira?”
The familiarity of it hit instantly. I froze. “Kade?”
We released each other at the same time. His scent changed. That’s why Lyra didn’t recognize him earlier.
A soft click followed, and the lights came on. I narrowed my eyes briefly, adjusting to the brightness.
We looked at each other, speaking at the same time. “What are you doing here?”
Kade’s gaze moved over me once before he answered. “I had a meeting here.”

So this was their plan all along. If they couldn’t force me to go to him, they’d bring me to him instead.
What I couldn’t figure out was the role Evelyn played in all of this. At that, Kade raised a brow slightly and simply held my gaze.
I stepped closer without hesitation, reaching up to hook a finger into his tie and giving it a slight pull.
He leaned forward with the motion, the distance between us disappearing in an instant. Our breaths mingled, warm and close.
My fingers traced lightly against his shirt, slow and deliberate, carrying an unmistakable edge of provocation.
His eyes darkened almost immediately, heat flickering beneath the surface.
But just as quickly, he pulled back, putting space between us again. A faint crease formed between his brows as his voice softened. “Did something happen?”
The tone caught me off guard for a fraction of a second, low and steady, with a warmth that didn’t quite fit the situation.
Why did that sound… real?
A faint smile touched my lips, though my gaze remained cool. “Nothing complicated. The Sorens couldn’t push me into asking you for help, so they decided to package me up and deliver me to your bed instead.”
I paused just long enough for the meaning to settle.
“Figured that might be enough to convince you to save their precious son.”
Kade’s expression darkened instantly. For a moment, something sharp flickered in his eyes before it softened, replaced by something quieter.
He lifted his hand and rested it lightly on my head, the gesture unexpectedly gentle.
I stilled, caught off guard. For a brief moment, an old memory surfaced, and my chest tightened without warning.
