Chapter 44 Unspoken Trust

Nira’s POV:

I could hear the concern beneath his tone.

I tilted my head slightly and looked at him. “I knew they couldn’t really do anything to me. I just didn’t expect them to use that instead of actual poison.”

That was exactly why I got caught off guard.

Because it wasn’t poison.

I took another sip of coffee. “It’s colorless and odorless. You can’t detect it. And technically, it’s not even poison.” I paused briefly. “Unless… well, otherwise there’s no real way to counter it.”

Kade looked at me seriously, his tone firm and unwavering. “You don’t put yourself in situations like that. And this time, it already backfired.”

He paused, his expression darkening slightly before continuing, “And once you realized what it was, you should’ve asked me to leave immediately. You don’t just… let things get out of hand like that. You should always put your safety first.”

For a moment, I felt like I was being lectured by my father….Why did that feel strangely reassuring?

“I only had a small amount,” I explained. “If I waited it out, it would’ve passed quickly.”

His expression didn’t soften at all. I muttered quietly, “If it had been anyone else, I would’ve thrown them out already.”

“Not even me,” Kade shot back immediately, his tone sharper than before.

I blinked, a little surprised by his reaction.

Then it hit me. Out of everyone… I had only kept him there. Just like I said, if it were any other man, I wouldn’t have hesitated.

But with him, I trusted him without even thinking about it.

That realization caught me off guard.

Kade seemed to realize he had reacted a bit strongly. His expression eased, and he opened his mouth as if he were about to say something.

A knock on the door interrupted him.

He stood up immediately and walked toward it, but halfway there, he glanced back at me, making sure I was properly dressed before opening the door.

I didn’t notice at all, still focused on my coffee.

As I took a sip, I couldn’t help but think to myself that Kade, as the heir to the alpha king, really did everything better than anyone else, even something as simple as making coffee.

Back at Silvermoon Pack, my adoptive father loved coffee, but I was never good at choosing beans or brewing it properly.

If he tasted this, he’d definitely like it.

Voices drifted in faintly from outside. It was Jett. I caught fragments. “Reporters… handled… cleared out…”

Jett’s POV:

After I finished my report, the air around Kade turned cold enough to make me instinctively lower my head.

“How did the reporters find out?” His voice was low and controlled, but there was a dangerous edge beneath it.

“We’re still investigating,” I replied carefully. “But initial findings suggest someone from the Soren side deliberately leaked the information.”

The Sørens really thought they could scheme against Kade, which was basically asking for trouble.

If it was that obvious to me, there was no way Kade hadn’t already seen straight through it. They were trying to use those photos to corner him.

And they had even gone as far as drugging their own daughter to

A flicker of something shifted in Kade’s expression as he looked at Nira. There was anger there, unmistakable, but also something softer beneath it.

He recognized it, the kind of betrayal that cut deeper when it came from your own family.

For a moment, the distance in his gaze faded, replaced by a quiet, restrained sympathy.

If he wanted to, he could wipe out the entire Soren family without effort. I had assumed he would order me to act immediately.

But after a brief pause, he said, “Leave the Soren family alone for now. I remember they’ve been eyeing that land on the south side.”

“Yes. They’re planning to build a large theme park there,” I answered. As his chief beta, I kept track of all major developments. He had dismissed that project before, saying the land wasn’t worth his attention.

“Funny,” Kade said, his eyes sharpening slightly, a faint, cold smile forming. “So am I.”
