I let out a quiet, dismissive laugh. “And what exactly are we betting on?”

Elise lifted her chin, a smug smile spreading across her face like she’d already won. “If I win, you’re going to apologize to me at the freshman welcome event tomorrow night, in front of the entire school. You’ll bow, and you’ll admit you’re not on my level.”

Tessa didn’t even hesitate. She stepped in front of me, her expression sharp. “Elise, what is wrong with you? You know Nira’s never even played, and you’re still trying to drag her into a match?”

Elise rolled her eyes, clearly annoyed. “Save it. Whether she knows how to play or not isn’t my problem. If she’s too scared, she can just say that instead of hiding behind excuses.”

That did it.

Tessa’s eyes sharpened, her wolf instincts flaring as she stepped forward, her posture shifting like she was seconds away from throwing hands.

I reached out and tapped her shoulder lightly, stopping her before things escalated. Then I looked back at Elise, my tone calm and even.

“You’ve made it pretty clear what happens if I lose,” I said. “What about you?”

Elise let out a short, mocking laugh, like the question itself was pointless. “If I lose, I’ll do the same thing. I’ll admit in front of everyone that I’m not as good as you. Happy?”

She tossed her hair back, arms folding across her chest, confidence written all over her face like the outcome was already decided.

“No deal.”

I let the words hang for a beat before continuing, “Not unless Janice is part of it too. Same terms.”

Janice stepped in quickly, like she hadn’t expected me to walk away so easily. She hesitated for a second, then forced a reluctant expression. “Fine. If it matters that much to you, I’ll do it.”

“Good.” I turned back to face them. “Half an hour. We’ll start then.”

With that, I walked over to Kade, who had just come back from taking a call.

“You said you’d teach me how to bowl,” I said, meeting his eyes. “Can we start now?”

Before he could answer, Elise’s voice cut in from behind me, dripping with sarcasm.

“Nira, are you that desperate to win? My cousin was just being polite, and you actually took it seriously? He’s the first in line to become alpha king. Why would he waste his time teaching someone like you?”

Janice chimed in softly, her tone almost gentle, but every word carefully placed. “He’s never taught anyone before. I remember this one time at the tennis courts, a girl from the Laurent family asked him for help. He didn’t even acknowledge her. Just turned her down in front of everyone. She was so embarrassed she had to leave right away.”

She paused, then looked at me like she was offering advice.

“And you think he’s going to teach you bowling?”

Aven stood off to the side with his arms crossed, watching with clear anticipation, like he was already waiting for me to be shut down.

To be fair, they weren’t entirely wrong.

Kade’s reputation spoke for itself. He was known across the entire pack alliance for being cold, decisive, and completely indifferent to anyone’s requests. He didn’t entertain people, didn’t waste time, and certainly didn’t go out of his way for others.

It made perfect sense that they were so sure he’d refuse.
