I let out a quiet laugh, the kind that didn’t carry any warmth.

“I don’t need fake concern,” I said. “Save it.”

Damon slammed his hand against the table, the sharp sound cutting through the room.

“That’s enough,” he said, his voice dropping into a low, controlled tone. “We didn’t bring you back here to argue.”

I walked over and took a seat, settling in comfortably as if none of this bothered me.

“Then get to the point,” I said. “Why am I here?”

His expression eased slightly, and just like that, his approach shifted.

“Nira,” he began, his tone softening, “there’s something you should know. Your brother has made a major breakthrough in the nanobot thrombosis project.”

There was a hint of excitement in his voice now, something he couldn’t quite hide.

“Once it moves into clinical use, it won’t just help low–tier wolves or hybrids without wolf spirits. It could change everything. For the family, for our position, for our future.”

He leaned forward slightly.

“The project is currently stuck at the clinical trial stage. What we need now is funding. Once that’s secured, everything else will fall into place.”

Eli didn’t wait for him to finish.

“You should talk to Kade,” he said bluntly. “With your connection to him, getting that investment shouldn’t be a problem.”

He frowned slightly, as if something still didn’t make sense to him. “He was interested before, but suddenly went quiet. No response at all.”

I listened without interrupting, then let out a slow, quiet laugh.

Leaning back against the couch, I let my gaze move across each of them, taking in their expressions one by one.

“So that’s what this is,” I said. “You brought me back because you think I’m still useful.”

Damon’s expression tightened, but he held himself back.

“Nira, I know things haven’t been fair to you,” he said, forcing patience into his voice. “But this concerns the entire family. Our future… and yours.”

I didn’t even hesitate.

“And what does that have to do with me?” Lasked.

“Think about it. Once your brother’s research succeeds, our standing in the pack alliance will rise. The Howell family won’t be so quick to reconsider your engagement just because you don’t have a wolf spirit.”

Right on cue, Janice stepped in, dabbing at her eyes as if she’d been holding back tears this whole time.

“This is my fault,” she said softly. “I took your place… your life. If helping your brother can fix things, I’ll do anything.”

I looked at her for a moment.

“Anything?”

The word lingered just long enough to make her hesitate. “Fine,” I said. “Then I’ll keep it simple.”

I leaned forward slightly, my voice steady.

“Move out of the Soren estate. Hold a press conference and tell the truth, that you’re not the real daughter. Give the title back. Then leave Blazeborn Pack for good.”

I held her gaze. “Can you do that?”

The tears on her face froze.

For a split second, something real broke through, panic, resentment, something ugly. Then it disappeared, replaced by the same fragile expression as before.

“…Okay,” she said, her voice shaking. “If it’s for the family… I’ll do it.”

She turned as if she were about to leave.

Aven moved instantly, grabbing her arm and pulling her back.

“That’s not happening,” he said coldly, his eyes locking onto mine. “Janice is my sister. She’s not going anywhere.”

I folded my arms, letting out a soft, humorless laugh.

“Funny,” I said. “Her mother switched us for her own benefit. While she was growing up here, living as the alpha’s daughter, I was out there trying not to get torn apart by rogue wolves.”
