Logan
“Lucas, my sweet pea, do you like our new house?”
Raelynn chimed and couldn’t hold her excitement back as the car stopped right in front of the house that I had been building for last four years. It was finally complete and ready to settle in.
“Dad, are we leaving our old house and live here, you, me and Mommy?” Lucas craned his head to ask
“Luke, now, you need to listen to what I have to say. You are my smart boy and I don’t want you to
misunderstand me.”
My heart was hammering because his last outburst still gave me fritters.
“Lucas, this is our new house, you, your Dad and mine. We’ll soon shift here.” Raelynn, whom I advised countless time to be patient, again spilled it.
“Auntie, why will you live with us? You are not our family.” Lucas, who was a well–behaved boy, snapped at her rudely and her face fell.
“Lucas, I-” She opened her mouth to say something but Lucas jerked his hand out of my hold and ran
towards the car.
“Lucas, wait!” I followed him and blocked his way.
“Dad, are you and Mommy fighting?” He asked me with in a hoarse voice. He was about to burst into tears any moment.
I was speechless. How could a four years old child observed such invisible tension between his parents?
“No, absolutely not, Luke. I am sorry, you have misunderstood me. This is Aunt Ray’s house. Do you like it?” I changed the subject.
I saw how relief washed over his innocent face.
“Logan, why don’t you tell-” Raelynn couldn’t finish her sentence because I gestured her to drop the topic.
For the first time I saw how my one impulsiveness could ruin my son’s life. His brain was yet to develop to understand the complexities of human relationships. I could explain him everything and try our best to win his heart once Tessa leaves.
“Aunt Ray wants us to help her in decorating her house that’s why we’re here today.” I said to him, “Will you help her?” I asked my son.
He looked hesitant for a moment but then he nodded his head.
“Okay, I will help her because I love helping Mommy in picking new things for our house.” He said.

Raelynn’s face fell.
“I’d love to see how little Lucas will help me.” She said with a forced smile.
I ruined the original plan of the family day out.
Lucas again refused the idea of accepting her his mother or even someone close to us.
For the next few hours, we placed everything on their right places. I was impressed by my genius son. He actually pointed where a vase would look good or the paintings on the walls, the curtains. Who would say that he was just a kid.
“It’s lunch time. Luke, are you hungry?” I asked my son who yawned.
“I’ll order some Chinese food. Do you like noodles, Lucas?” Raelynn asked our son.
“I eat vegetables and home cooked food in lunch. Mommy says we should not eat take outs much, it’s unhealthy.” Lucas told her.
Her face fell again but I couldn’t say anything because I also pay attention on Lucas‘ eating habits.
“I’ll order from a high–end restaurant, my sweet pea. It won’t be greasy or unhealthy.” She tried to change
his mind.
“I ate pizza today so I won’t eat junk food again.” He flatly refused her request and turned to me, “Dad, I am sleepy.” He said to me.
His eyes were closing. He looked tired,
“Sure, my boy. Let me tug you in the bed.” I patted his head and led him to the master bedroom since we didn’t disclose his room.
He dozed off in no time. After ensuring that he was safe, I walked out of the room and approached
Raelynn whose face reflected how upset she was.
“We can order for us. I don’t know about you but I am hungry.” I said.
She snapped her head in my direction.
“Logan, why are you doing this to me?” Her words were sharp but her eyes became teary
“Ray, I am sorry. I can understand how you’re feeling but I can’t lose my son.” I confessed.
She blinked her eyes in disbelief.
“He is our son, Logan. Do you hear me? I have carried him inside me. I am his mother, Logan and you are denying my rights. This is unfair. You stopped me from telling him the truth.” She exploded her frustration on me.
“You have all the rights on him as much as I do, Ray but I am afraid that he’ll be distanced from us if we keep forcing him to accept the truth because his mind isn’t ready.” I said.
