“Happy birthday, Dad!”
Lucas wished his father in the happiest voice, lea, and running towards his father who walked out of his room. Logan immediately knelt down and kissed his son’s forehead and then hugged him.
“Thank you, Luke. Where is Dad’s gift?” Logan’s eyes shone the happiness he felt as he stroked his son’s head with affection.
“I have prepared a surprise gift with Mommy but you have to come home early so we can celebrate your birthday. Grandma, Grandpa and Aunt Lea also want to celebrate your birthday with us.” Lucas spilled everything to his father.
“Of course, Luke. I’ll finish my work as soon as possible and come home.” Logan promised his son but it made me roll my eyes.
What a lame excuse he gave to his son!
I sat at a distance, pretending to be engrossed in the newspaper I was reading but my eyes were on the father–son duo. It was painful for me to not wish him even if it was a simple gesture. I used to wish him and gifted him something not very expensive yet meaningful and he always accepted them, even used
them.
But this year was different, not because I decided to not wish him or gift him something but the late night post of my cousin. She wished him birthday at sharp twelve in the night with some old pictures, not their faces but I knew when and where they were taken.
She also wrote a post about spending the evening, celebrating her love’s birthday in the most romantic
way.
Not many people knew about her new social media account. It was a cruel reminder for me to remember my place.
“Kelly, I have an early meeting so I can’t stay for breakfast.” Logan said to our maid.
I still didn’t look up even though he was standing just a meter away.
“Okay, Sir and happy birthday.” Kelly wished him too.
“Thank you, Kelly. I’ll get going now.” He said.
“Mommy, why haven’t you wished Dad yet?”
My heart nearly skipped a beat when my genius son threw a difficult question at me.
I folded the newspaper and put it down on the table when I met my son’s frowning gaze.
“You stole your Dad’s time so I had to wait, Lucas. Don’t be mad at me.” I pouted.

“You’re forgiven but now, wish him.” My son ordered me.
I exhaled sharply and finally shifted my gaze on him and the awkwardness again dawned between us.
“Happy birthday.”
Only two words, in a formal tone but still I felt hard speak.
“Thanks, Tessa.” He replied, his tone was undecipherable.
“Not like this, Mommy. Give him a kiss too.” Lucas demanded and my eyes widened.
Normally, Lucas behaved well and never asked us to behave like a happy couple. I gulped hard and looked at Logan nervously. He also looked hesitated.
“Lucas, your Dad is getting late for work. Please, be a good boy and let him go.” I tried to convince my son in a sweet voice.
“But a kiss won’t take long.” Lucas grumbled but then grinned widely, “Okay, if you are shy then say ‘I love you‘ to Dad.” Lucas dropped another bomb.
It was like a do or die situation.
Suddenly, Logan’s phone rang and he wasted no time in receiving it. I knew it was to avoid the predicament that our son put us into.
“Hello, yes, I am coming. Prepare everything before I reach.” He talked briefly over the phone and ended
the call.
