Mommy, why Dad is so late? He promised to come in the evening but it’s almost eight.” Lucas, with a fallen face asked me.

And like always, I had no answer to my son’s query about his father.

“Dad must be stuck in the traffic or he’s gotten some important work. He’ll be home soon.” I gave him empty hopes.

But what made me more anxious was Logan’s parents who were waiting in the living room. Kevin was upset with his son and blamed Raelynn for keeping his son engaged when he should be spending time with his family.

“Tessa, if you have paid attention to your marriage and impressed my brother then he’d have ran back into his old lover’s arms.‘ Lea taunted me who walked into the kitchen to fetch herself water.

“Not in front of Lucas, Lea.” I warned her and asked Kelly to take Lucas to his grandparents so I could have a serious conversation with my haughty sister–in–law.

“Lucas is a kid but he isn’t dumb, Lea. Please, I beg you, don’t say something like this in front of him. because he is a sensitive kid.” I reminded her.

She smirked scanning me from top to bottom.

“Tessa, I pity you. Just look at yourself. Three years and yet you aren’t changed. I don’t like your cousin either but she is rich in looks and you know what men like. No wonder why my brother didn’t wait to ask for a divorce.” She changed the subject from taunting to shaming me.

I sucked a deep breath. She loved testing my patience.

“Our divorce shouldn’t be your concern, Lea. Please, stop meddling in my life. I am being polite with you doesn’t mean I’ll listen to your derogatory words.” I said with hurt.

I didn’t understand why she found happiness in picking on me.

“I wonder how my brother failed to see worth in you and your cousin. Now, call my brother and ask him to come home before Dad loses his temper.” She said and walked out of the kitchen.

I sighed in exasperation and contemplated whether to call Logan because his phone went to voicemail when I tried to call him an hour ago.

Raelynn’s social media posts were my update on what they were doing and it was actually very suffocating to imagine how easily Logan forgot his promise to his son.

I stopped myself and decided to wait like others because I had no intention to spend another day sulking and wasting the time I had left. I’d rather spend it with Lucas.

I served mocktails in a tray and took it to Logan’s parents.

“Tessa, can you call my son?” Kevin, who was getting angry with passing time, asked me.

I placed the tray on the table and sat down on the sofa opposite to my in–laws.

“I tried calling him but it went on voicemail.” I told 1.

He shook his head in displeasure.

“Lillia, I think we need to have a serious conversation with our son. I don’t think I can tolerate this kind of behaviour anymore. He finds excuses to avoid a family meeting.” Kevin said.

His disappointment in Logan openly came on surface.

“Tessa, as a wife, it’s your duty to make sure your husband doesn’t wander off to distractions.” Lillia also found fault in me for her son’s actions.

At this point, I couldn’t decide if I kept defending myself or silently ignore her baseless remarks.

“It’s not Tessa’s fault, Lillia. Your son is a careless man who is running from his family. Does he really think that he can change my mind about his ex–girlfriend?” Kevin gritted his teeth.

“Dad, please, don’t get angry. Logan doesn’t break his promise to Lucas. I am sure he’s caught in work. We shouldn’t jump to conclusions like that.” I said, I didn’t know why was I defending a husband who was out celebrating his day with his lover.

Our conversation came to an abrupt end when Lucas came, his fallen face and watery eyes caused my

heart to clench.

“Mommy, please call Dad.” He asked me in an almost pleading tone.

“Luke, baby come to Grandma. I’ll call your Dad.” Lillia opened her arms for her grandson.

Lillia always tried to keep him away from me whenever she got a chance but it was Lucas who never listened to anyone when it comes to his mother.

“Go to grandma.” I softly said to him because right in that moment, it was hard for me to see tears and disappointment in my son’s eyes.

He never disobeyed me so he nodded his head silently and went to Lillia. She dialled her son’s number but it again went to voicemail.

“Lillia, I am leaving. If you want to come then I’ll wait only for five minutes. The more I stay here, the more I’ll regret having Logan as my son.” Kevin lost his patience and rose from his seat.
