Tessa

“Why aren’t you going inside? Don’t tell me that my brother forbade you to see him.” Lea taunted me with a wicked smile but I chose not to react and patiently waited outside Logan’s room for Lucas to come out.

I took Lucas to see his father in the morning before school. I decided not to go inside and pretend to be happy and interact with him.

“Why isn’t the cat pouncing back at me?” Lea tried to provoke me again but I responded with patient

silence.

“I can’t believe why my brother is stuck between two women who are the most pathetic of their kind.”

Lea muttered under her breath and walked inside.

I sighed and glanced at my watch. Lucas was with his father for more than fifteen minutes.

The door opened again and Lucas walked out. His face had a scowl.

“Are we ready to go now?” I asked him with a smile but he ignored me which was strange because he never threw tantrums with me and he was beaming with excitement when we came to the hospital.

“Lukey, what happened? Are you upset with me?” I asked him softly once we settled inside the car.

“Mommy, are you fighting with Dad?” He asked me, this time he seemed upset with me.

“Lucas, who told you this? We’re not fighting.” I lied and hoped he believed me.

“No, don’t lie because Dad told me that you are not talking to him.” He said.

My jaws dropped. Did Logan really feed it to Lucas?

“Your Dad is lying, Lucas. We’re not fighting. I just wanted you to have your quality time with your Dad.” I tried to explain him the partial truth.

He gave me a narrowed look.

“Mommy, Dad said that you are avoiding him. This isn’t good. Dad is injured. You should take care of him.” He advised me like an old man.

“Seriously?” I shook my head, “You are a kid so you won’t understand that not every time we can’t be happy. There are ups and downs in our lives, Lucas.” I tried to make him understand in a simpler way without hurting his feelings.

“Mommy, I only want to see you and Dad happy. You know he looked sad because he was alone at the hospital.” Lucas, my observant boy said in a low voice but I heard him anyway.

“Lucas, I am sorry if I had made you upset in any way. I really am.” I apologized to my son because I didn’t want him to be depressed.

It wasn’t healthy for a child‘ mental health.

“Then patch up with Dad. We’ll take him home tomorrow. Let him make feel good just like you do with me when I catch fever or cold.” My son advised me wisely.

I wish it was as simple as his innocent request.

After dropping him at his school, I drove to my office. Throughout the ride, the thoughts of Logan invaded my mind and work was the only way to distract my mind.

Adrian was present during the final discussion of our designs.

“Alright, team. I have reviewed all the sketches made by all of you, especially the team leader and our CEO, Ms. Tessa Vance. We’re ready to start the making of our maiden collection. Let’s do it, guys and in ninety days, we’ll do our first show, our grand opening.” Adrian addressed the meeting.

The meeting room echoed with applauds.

“Tessa, do you want to say something to your team mates?” Adrian approached me.

“I trust my team and I want everyone to work like a family.” I said in a single line and raised the toast.

I walked to the glass window with my drink to have a moment alone. They were chatting and celebrating overcoming the first phase of our new journey.

“How is Logan now?” Adrian’s voice made me flinch because I was too engrossed in my thoughts.

“He is getting better. He’ll be discharged tomorrow.” I told him but my eyes were looking out at the busy

road.

“If you want to take a few days‘ leave to take care of him then you can. The production will go smoothly because you’re a great team leader.” He said.

“No, it’s fine. I can’t take leave at this crucial point because there’s house help so he will be taken care of. He can also call his girlfriend to come over and take care of him.” I said try not to sound bitter.

“And you’ll be okay with it?” He raised his brow.

“I have made my peace, Adrian and let’s not talk about my married life. Tell me, what are your plans? Are you seeing someone?” I tried to divert the subject.

“I don’t have time and I don’t think I can enter into a relationship until I am mentally prepared for a shared

life.” He answered.

There was a brief moment of silence between us.

“Are you coming for a team dinner since our lunch plan is also cancelled.” He asked.

I looked behind him at my team. They had done hard work for last one week.

“Yes, I think I am free today.” I nodded my head.
