“Easy, Lucas! Don’t go near the shore. The waves are strong”

Logan shouted and trailed behind our over excited son who was running along the shore. The pink sky, the sun setting in the west horizon. The water looked like an ocean of lava as the sun was casting its last rays.

The evening was beautiful. We were together, the three of us. A perfect family time how I always pictured but there was a storm brewing inside me.

I couldn’t find the peace that I once searched.

“Mommy, Dad! See what I have found.” Lucas picked something from the sand and ran to us.

“Lucas, please, don’t run without us by your side because the waves are strong.” Logan sat down on the damp sand.

“Mommy, I found a beautiful sea shell.” He opened his tiny palm and with excitement, he showed me the small treasure that he had secured.

“It’s beautiful, Lucas. We’ll collect them in a jar but for that we have to come here in the morning. It’s getting dark now.” I said taking the piece from him.

“Dad, let’s take a selfie.” Lucas nudged his father who nodded and took out his phone to capture the moment in his phone.

We took many photos, some together as a family and most of them were of Lucas alone.

By the time we returned to the beach house, it was already dark. Quickly changing my clothes, I went to the kitchen to prepare our food while Logan helped Lucas to shower.

My mind kept drifting to my pregnancy and all the ways to tell the news to Logan because it was going to change dynamics.

“Do you need any help?” Logan’s husky voice forced me to look away from the pan.

He entered in the kitchen wearing a sleeveless T–shirt and shorts. His fresh shower gel fragrance calmed me.

“Yes, you can prepare the salad and add some curd in the bigger bowl.” I instructed him.

“You’ll eat with curd?” He asked me and I nodded.

I couldn’t tell him that the smell of fried food was making me nauseous but I couldn’t ruin their taste.

“Tessa, if you don’t want to eat what you have cooked, we can order something you like. I mean it’s too plain to eat only raw vegetables.” He said.

“No, I actually want to eat some salad because I had a heavy lunch.” I lied.

It seemed he understood my explanation and prepared the salad without further questions.

We sat down to have our dinner. The sound of sea waves in the background and the light chatter made the evening pleasant.

“Mommy, shall we make a collage of our trip pictures?” Lucas asked me.

“Yes, it’s a good idea. We’ll have these photos frame in your room.” I suggested.

“Lucas, save some energy for tomorrow because we’re going on a nearby island where you can do more activities. It’s time to rest or you’ll wake up late in the morning.” Logan reminded him.

“But I want us to watch a movie together.” Lucas pouted.

“It’s still seven so let him watch a movie because he sleeps half way through the movie.” I said.

Logan looked at me because I was quiet most of the time and listened to Lucas‘ chatters.

We sat down to watch the movie in the living room. It was a sci–fi movie. Lucas cuddled between us.

“Dad, I want to go to a planetarium.” Lucas said.

“Okay, I’ll take you there in your winter vacation where you get many interesting knowledge.” Logan ruffled his hairs.

We concentrated on the movie.

But only fifteen minutes had passed and Lucas again nudged us.

“Mommy, I lied to you earlier. I feel lonely sometimes.” He said looking at me.

I bit my inner mouth because I didn’t expect him to raise this subject in Logan’s presence.

“Really? I never thought you’d feel lonely but I guess I have a solution.” Logan said with an amused smile.

This time I was also curious.

“We’ll bring a dog. You have been asking me to have a pet and I think a dog will be your best buddy.” Logan came with most logical solution.

Why was I thinking that he’d say that a sibling would ease his loneliness.

“Tessa, what do you say? Should we adopt a dog or a cat?” Logan asked me.

“I think it’s up to Lucas what he likes.” I smiled and looked down at our son.
