Chapter 45

Eloise always felt on edge in that relationship. Of course, some of that was her own doing.

She had carried too many hopes into her reunion with Grayson, imagining things might turn out differently this time. But reality hit her hard.

She had built a wall around her heart and dug in her heels, refusing to face the relationship.

Eloise knew Grayson probably had feelings for her; she just didnt know how serious they were. And besides, there was Camille.

She was fragile and greedy for reassurance. She was too timid to risk it all. Instead of constantly feeling anxious, she decided it was better to keep things just as they were.

Putting on a perfect poker face, she pushed Grayson back. “Save it. Whoever holds your heart now is no concern of mine.”*

Grayson stood there, his eyes fixed on her. Her warmth still clung to his fingertips, impossible to shake off.

Eloise avoided his gaze and walked over to the sink, starting to wash the dishes. But she kept listening for any movement behind her.

There was a rustling noise from behind her. After a moment, Grayson said, “I’m leaving.”

Eloise didn’t turn around. She waited until she heard the door close before looking back. The trash was gone. He was grabbing the trash bag just now.

She walked into the living room and saw that the trash bag there was gone, too.

‘Well, guess he’s not totally clueless after all. At least he knows to make out the trash, Eloise thought.

Noah poked his head in at the kitchen door. “Mom, what’s a granddaughter-in-law?”

Eloise stared at him, caught off guard. “It’s just a title, sweetie.”

Noah pouted, clearly unsatisfied with her answer. ‘She’s dodging he question, Noah thought, then he gave up and ran off to play.

The mere thought of Grayson and Hannah annoyed Eloise. Hannah had no clue, and Grayson was just stirring things up, making it even messier.

Grayson drove up to 58 Vernal Road and spotted Camille waiting by the front door, two bags of groceries sitting next to He stopped the car, rolled down the window, but didn’t get out.

It was late October in Ekloland, and the nights were already getting chilly, Camille’s cheeks were purple from the cold.

Grayson frowned. “Get in the car,” he said.

Camille rubbed her hands together, then picked up the two bags of groceries at her feet and tried to open the passenger door, but it was locked.

Grayson said coolly, “Sit in the back.”

Camille’s face fell, but she quietly got into the back seat. She spotted a bag of blucherry pie sitting in the back seat.

“I totally forgot to buy blueberry pie when I was in Yaiville last time. What a shame.” Camille said.

Grayson glanced at it. That was the blueberry pie Beckett had given Eloise. Grayson had left it in the back and forgotten all

about it.

He had considered throwing it away, but Eloise hated wasting food, so he still hadn’t decided what to do with it. No matter what, there was absolutely no way he was going to let Eloise eat anything from Beckett.

Grayson drove into the villa, parked the car, and said casually, “If you want it, take it.”

Camille’s eyes lit up, a smile spreading across her face. “Guess I’ll help myself then,” she said.

Grayson didn’t get out of the car. He sat there, typing away on his phone.

Camille bit her lip, trying to sound casual. “Grayson, you said on the phone you have a girlfriend. You were just messing with me, right? You never mentioned her before.”

Grayson didn’t even look up from his phone. “Why would I lie to you? I just haven’t gotten her yet,” he replied.

Wait, Grayson is actually chasing after someone? He’s the most eligible bachelor in Ekloland. Countless women would kill to be with him,’ Camille thought, completely stunned.

She was convinced that if he ever showed interest, he wouldn’t have to do anything; women would line up for him.

Who would he ever have to chase after? Who could possibly be so blind to his worth?’ Camille thought.

Camille had always tiptoed around Grayson, constantly worried that even the tiniest misstep would make him lose interest

in her.

Now, hearing that he was pursuing someone else, she was seething with jealousy. Yet, she refused to let it go.

“Seriously? You must be joking. You, of all people, chasing after someone?” Camille blurted out, disbelief written all over her face.

Grayson rolled down the window. Her strong perfume annoyed him.

He shrugged, not really caring. “I’m just a regular guy. If I like someone, I make a move. What, do you think I should wait around for her to come to me? Life doesn’t work that way.”

Camille protested, “But you’re the heir of the Pierce family. Why would you ever need to chase after anyone? People should be chasing you.”

Grayson gave a bitter laugh. “Right? I’ve got the looks and the money. So why won’t she just say yes to me?”

Camille felt her chest tighten

irritation. Through gritted teeth, she asked, “Can you at least tell me what she’s like?”

Grayson’s fingers paused on his phone, and Eloise’s face popped into his mind. “She’s beautiful. And honestly, she’s infuriating,” he said.

Camille had never heard Grayson speak like that before. When he talked about his girlfriend, his whole face softened with satisfaction and adoration, his voice full of fondness and just a touch of resignation.

Now she knew for sure that Grayson was chasing after someone Before, she had convinced herself it was impossible that Grayson would have a girlfriend. But now she knew he was really into someone else.

Never before had Camille seen Grayson look so expressive. The only consolation was that he hadn’t won that girl over yet, which meant Canille still had a chance.

But even if Grayson really did have a girlfriend, Camille wasn’t going to give up. She’d worked too hard for this. She couldn’t let it go now. She had to marry into the Pierce family.

Grayson put his phone away and opened the car door. “I called you a ride. It’s waiting at the entrance. Get out.”

Camille bit her lip and didn’t budge, giving him a pitiful look. “I waited for you for so long, and it’s freezing out here. Can’t I at least come inside for a bit?”

Grayson looked at her coldly. “It’s too late. It’s not appropriate.”

Camille said, “Come on, we’re friends. Just let me come in for a bit. It’s not a big deal, right? Your girlfriend wouldn’t be that unreasonable, would she? Besides, she’s not even your girlfriend yet.”
